I wish it were smaller and lighter, but other than that Im pretty happy with it. The zoom and focus controls are very smooth, and I like having the option to lock the zooming mechanism (although I have not experience a problem I read about where the lens extends simply due to the force of gravity). I am not skilled or experienced enough to render a judgment as to the optical qualities of this lens, however I do take lots of photographs with it and have no complaints about what I see.

In general I like this lens but without the latest firmware version .02, phase detect focus doesnt work. My lens was shipped with firmware .01 which only has contrast detect AF. From what Ive read, the firmware can only be updated by Sony. I did by this lens used from Southtown Camera through Amazon. I was shooting sunsets when I noticed the autofocus was hunting on my A6300. Sigh.

I would not use this lens in low light unless I have a tripod. On a steady surface, night shots are not bad at all. It is really nice. For starts, it is small and light. No frivolous comment, I bought a NEX for its light weight. It gets a bit soft at 200mm but, it is only a walk around $800 lens! Mind you, it is not terribly soft either. It has a great balance in my NEX 7. Color matches the camera and NO, it does not look cheap at all. In fact, it is an elegantly designed lens. More later...these are just my first impressions. Jan 17. Still loving it! Jan 21. The lens produce very good quality images, however, it has a slow focusing which is annoying at times. It it like the camera does not know where to focus. It does not happen all the time but it is annoying just the same. When that happens, one has to help it with manual focusing. I have read many photographers recommending manual focusing...well, it is not difficult to focus manually with the NEX 7 since the camera brings in the object of your photo so you can focus without much problem. However, there are times when you need fast automatic focusing to work. This is an all walk around tool which should be there for you for landscape as well as street photography. The former takes a tripod and you have time to manual focus but the latter relies on your speed to capture the moment. I have taken a star from my previous evaluation of this lens.

I am just putting this new lens through its initial paces, but so far I am very satisfied. I just finished a large Autumn New England foliage shoot and came away with some nice images, with very little distortion or chromatic aberration through the entire focal length range of the lens. I use a monopod for distance shots. The lens is reasonably light and has a small profile and therefore doesnt overwhelm my little NEX-7. I am happy with the purchase, so far.

This is now my main lens. I like that it saves me the trouble of having to change lenses. The quality of the photos is great. Its heavier than the kit lenses, but not too heavy. Its worth the trade off. The only downside to it is that casts a shadow in the lower left hand corner when using the built-in flash. If not for that, I would have given it 5 stars.

I used this lens on my Sony a6300 on a recent trip to Peru and Ecuador. The main use case for this lens was travel: it is light weight, relatively compact and produces excellent images. As always, longer focal length and faster would have been better in some circumstances, but all in all this lens performed admirably. Focussing was slower than I would have liked, and I found myself using the DMF mode on the camera to get focus as precise as possible, especially at the long end of the zoom
