This sigma glass is tack sharp at 1.4. Not soft. Build quality is great. Auto focus in af-c is pretty fast for non Sony lens. Its not g master fast. Anyone who used a g master lens will know it locks on focus in an instant. The sigma doesnt (tbh i didnt expect it to be instant). I did notice slight lag and at times it seems to freeze up the auto focus system in my a7 r iii. Eye af works great. It does nail the focus. This lens seem to have auto focus issues in af-s mode. It hunts a lot in this mode. If you are going to shoot a lot of af-s, this lens isnt for you. Otherwise af-c works great with very little hunting back and forth. I also noticed I would get random flickering for some reason when I use this lens. It didnt matter if it was good or bad lighting. Not sure why?. Didnt get this flickering using the Sony glass or adapted Canon glass (with mc-11 adapter) shooting in same conditions. Wasnt very heavy. Feels pretty balanced. I thought it was going to be a lot heavier and bigger from what I read. Giving 2 stars mainly because of af issues and flickering. 10/12/18 update I just updated to the new version 2 update for A7r iii. It fixed a lot of the hunting/af issue I was having. Single point af is a lot better. Still hunts but ALOT less. It went from like 2-3 seconds to like 1 second. Auto focus is now on the same level with the g master or very close to it. GIving it 4 stars instead of 2 now.

The way this lens performs is really outstanding, i could not be happier with the way it utilizes the auto-focus system on the Sony ariii, the bokeh it has is beautiful, and I actually really prefer the weight of it, the construction feels solid. Ive rented it twice for jobs lasting a week or two and will buy this and the 50mm of the same line .

I wanted a 35mm lens and didnt want to make any compromises. I looked at lens reviews and every review pointed to this being the best 35mm lens that you can get for Sony. I was not disappointed. I wanted a lens that was very sharp and this lens delivers. It is tough to go wrong with this lens. The one thing that this lens is not is compact. Originally when I bought my Sony A7iii, i like the fact that it was one of the smallest full frame mirrorless cameras available, so it was with some hesitation that I got this lens, since the package of the camera body and Lens is a little bulky. But you simply cannot get the same quality with smaller lenses. Maybe you can shave some weight if you dont need the ultrafast 1.4 aperture, but why make compromises if you dont want to. Works for me. It is fairly common to pick this lens up for $200 less than MSRP, which i did. Hope my review helps, and if you are on the fence about this lens, you neednt be. The only thing competing with this lens are the Sigma 28mm 1.4 and the Sigma 40mm 1.4 and they are both much more expensive than this lens, for just slightly better image quality.
