I bought this lens for headshots, I already own 105 2.8 macro and 50mm 1.4. Before purchasing this lens I was seriously contemplating if its a necessary purchase because of the 105mm but this lens is proved its worth. Its a magnificent lens with very high resolution, stunningly sharp. Focus is fast enough for most applications. If you do headshots like me just go out and buy this lens, nothing beats it for resolution and sharpness.

Beautiful bokeh, contrast, resolution, sharpness and image rendition. One of the best lenses that you can mount onto your D810 that Nikon has to offer.

Very nice image quality. The thing i noticed right away was a bit more chromatic aberration than normally so be extra mindful of that in post process. Other than that great portrait lens. Bought mine used - like new in MINT condition for some 350 bucks. Quality-to-price ratio is through the ceiling.. Something Id expect from 1200+ lens. This one is also a great budget alternative to the 85mm f1.4.

I absolutely LOVE this lens. It takes fantastic pictures. Its crisp and clear. It is a beautiful portrait lens and is a must-have for your photography lens collection. In addition to portraits I find this great for close up shots of nature, details, etc. it has great speed and sharp focus. I have been blown away by my pictures.

I have heavier, more expensive Nikon lenses but this 85mm f/1.8G is just right for air travel. With the recent Nikon discounts this lens is bargain priced lens yet produces sharp and contrasty images when used with my D800e. My intended use is mostly for street and landscape photography so - the aperture will be stopped down from f/4.5 to f/7.1 I recommend always leaving the lens hood on and using a B+W nano coated clear filter to protect the front element without degrading the image. Internal focus and lens mount gasket, great features.

I love this lens. It doesnt leave my camera. Period. The only time it does is when I need to shoot a group of people and Im in a cramped setting. But when Im shooting a wedding, an engagement session, an athlete, a family or a child this lens absolutely cannot be beat. (Especially for the price). At the moment Im trying to decide if I want to "upgrade" to the sigma 85mm 1.4 or the Nikon 85mm 1.4 but for the time being I absolute could not be happier. Get this lens!!! (I shoot with a Nikon D610)

One of my favorite lenses by far. Perfect for portraits and getting amazing bokeh. Lens is fast and great in low light. Definitely a must have for my D750.

Ive been shooting for almost 10 years, Im a Commercial Photographer shooting on a Nikon D750 and D500. Ive had dozens of lenses DX and FX, but this is hands down the sharpest, cleanest lens Ive ever used. On a crop sensor like my D500 its magic. Forget the 35mm f/1.8 or the 50mm f/1.4, spend the extra money and get this if youre doing any kind of portrait or commercial work. The bokeh is creamy and clean on my D500 up to ISO 8000. On my D750 its still a really great lens, Bokeh is obviously not as good as when its mounted to the D500, but its still tack sharp at any distance. I would pay twice the price for this lens after using it. Stop reading reviews, order it, order it now.

I love prime lenses for their low light abilities, background blur, and my ability to "see" the shot before I take it because the distance is set. I am just a hobbiest and small business here....but when I did all my exhaustive research on this lens I couldnt quite find answers to this question so I thought it might be helpful to someone else. Forgive me for not being exactly technical or savvy on all the details... I already have a 35mm lens....will this replace it? I was hopeful that it would just so I could sell and make some money to offset the cost of this lens but No - it will be its new best friend. :D The two are a perfect pairing. 35mm is great for everyday use. It sees as my eye sees and its so easy to catch great photos and you wont find yourself limited in a small room (too far/too close). The aperature/background blur looks professional, its lightweight and short so its easy to take anywhere. This 85 has the same aperature but because youre increasing the space between you and your subject the blur is gorgeous especially for portraits. At quick glance you wont notice a huge difference in the blur but it is enough to make me very happy with my purchase. Its obviously a good bit longer (and heavier) which has pros and cons to the 35mm. The first being that I dont have to be so close to my subjects. With adults this is a plus as I feel they feel more comfortable when my lens is not up in their face. With small children this is a con as it limits the interactions Im able to have with them since Im so far away. In some instances I find its a perfect length and I have to do less chasing to get my photo, in others I find myself in the street to get the shot I want of my kids in the front yard. It just depends on your environment. This is not an ideal indoor lens. Its too long and you wont get anything but heads. Birthday parties, family get togethers...this is not your lens. But take it outdoors and FALL in love with it. My point is - if you had to pick just one lens, the 35mm is the most versatile but the 85mm is its prettier, older sister. :) I am quickly seeing how I love having the 85mm in my life.

This lens is just awesome, especially on an FX body. It gives the perfectly out of focus backgrounds (bokeh) youre looking for on portraits and close ups. Its sharp enough wide open and gets sharper if you stop it down a little. This lens might be a little long on an DX body, giving a focal length of about 127mm, but still performs great since youre just using the best part of the lens - the center. The AF-S focus is quick, similar to the rest of the refreshed 1.8 primes, but not as fast as the professional level zooms. Just get one, you wont regret it. Its worth noting that if youre purchasing here on Amazon, check your lens over thoroughly upon arrival. The first lens I received was obviously well used! While the Amazon box was still taped, and the Nikon box was well packaged within, the lens had been swapped at some point. Upon opening the Nikon box, it looked like a child had crammed all the parts into the box! The warranty paperwork wasnt complete, the manual was ripped, and the lens itself was not properly fitted into the protective plastic.
