I am a professional sports photographer and this is great for shots around the rim in basketball. Autofocus is fast enough to get by using an enthusiast-level body (D7100, etc) but works flawless with a D500. Would recommend for somebody looking for a fast aperture at a great price

I got a Nikon d3500 as a gift after graduating from grad school, and I immediately started taking pictures. As much as I loved what I was getting with the lenses that came with the camera (SAMs Club value pack), I was not happy with the bokeh I was getting from the 4.8+ aperture of those lenses (they are really versatile). I did a bunch of research and learned that, for the money, this lens was supposed to be the best value for the money. Ive only had the lens for about 45 minutes, and already took my oldest daughters 5th grade graduation pictures, and they are awesome. So good, in fact, that my wife who is a bit skeptical about the whole thing, talked about how good the pictures look. Im not a pro, and I cant speak to the performance of the lens from that perspective, but I can tell you that if you are looking for great looking, smooth bokeh, youll get it with this lens.

I purchased this Lens in December 2016, but I got the first chance to test it out this past weekend during my trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI. Im not a professional photographer and I dont know much about photography--I like to take photos whenever I get a chance. I consider myself a beginner photographer and I still have a lot to learn, so dont expect me to go into details, pros and cons, I will just share the photos that I took with this lens on my Nikon D3300 camera.

Bokeh. Thats all Ive got to say. Okay, okay, I have more to say. But I just love the bokeh on this lenses. I got this lens to start taking headshots. At nights, I do nightclub photography. Ive been getting request to take portfolio headshots by a few guest. I hope to master this style, before I officially start taking clients.

--UPDATED REVIEW-- After a good deal of time using the 50mm f/1.4D, I decided that I wanted to pick up a quieter auto-focus lens so I decided to give the 50mm f/1.8G another shot. Im pleased to say that the experience has been much better this time around. On my D810 and D850, its still not wicked sharp wide open, but few lenses are on those camera. Once I stop down to around f/2.8 or so, it actually gets surprisingly sharp for such a cheap lens. I wont get into color rendition because it seems rather pointless given how much the colors get changed anyway during post-processing. Overall, I find the rendition of the lens to be rather clinical, which is to say that its seems to focus more on accurately recording the scene in sharp detail rather than imparting "character" as some other lenses tend to do. I find this to be a good thing in a 50mm since the focal length itself tends to be one that most photographers would consider to be the "normal" focal length. Overall, this lens has been a joy to use this second time around which makes me wonder what was going on with that first copy. Maybe it got knocked around during shipping? I dont know. Either way, after experiencing what this lens is capable of offering, I felt compelled to come and update this review because it really is a great lens for the beginner and enthusiast alike thats offered a very reasonable price. -- OLD REVIEW -- Given all of the positive reviews, I probably just got a bad copy, but the lens was just unacceptably soft for me which I didnt expect since it flies in the face of most of the reviews Ive read about this. As far as I could tell, it wasnt a front or back-focusing issue as micro-adjustments didnt seem to help at all and in order to get my copy as sharp as I wanted, I had to stop it down to f5.6, which just completely defeats the purpose. Ended up returning it and trying out a 50mm 1.4D which I just decided to stick with. I know I could have exchanged it and it probably would have been fine, but the whole experience just left a bad taste in my mouth. Aside from my particular issues, I can definitely say that the lens itself felt built pretty well for the price. A lot of people like to cry about how they dont make them like they used to—which usually just means that they dont make them out of metal anymore—but plastics have come a long way over the years and definitely have plenty of benefits. Most of the people that make this complaint just miss that hefty feeling, which is more of an argument of personal preference rather than an argument of the objective merits of the materials used. All materials have their pros and cons, but the materials used to construct this lens seemed more than durable enough while having the benefit of being lightweight. The autofocus responded quickly and crisply without much hunting at all. All in all, given the low cost of the lens, its worth at least trying out. Youll probably have better luck than me.

This is an inexpensive lens that performs just as well as it more expensive counterpart, the 50mm f/1.4G. I use this mainly on a Nikon D5100 but it does see some action on my Nikon D800 as well. When used on the D5100, it is the equivalent of a 75mm focal length on a full-frame sensor. If you are fairly new to the world of photography and love pictures where the subject is crystal clear but the background is out of focus and blurry, then this lens will give you that with ease! Because of it wide aperture (f/1.8) is works extremely well in low light situations. When I first started photography I would struggle with the kits lens that came with my camera indoors and would have to jack up the ISO just to get a usable image but came at the cost of a lot of noise (grain). When I got this lens, I was able to stay in the lower ISO range and get some awesome pictures with great depth of field.

Great lens for what I needed. I do close up concert photography and this is great in low light.

Great lens. I started out with the Nikon D3300 Kit lens, which is a nice lens also, but I was missing a strong bokeh in my photos. After some research, this sounded like the right lens for me. The quality that this lens produces was exactly what I was looking for to take my photos to the next level. The photos are very sharp and the bokeh is amazing. As other comments have said, I do notice that this lens is not ideal for landscape photos.

Amazing lens for portraits! Its a good size and weight. Pictures come out amazing! Beautiful Bokeh and cristal clear! I use it on a d3300 and it works great on DX cameras. Keep in mind the crop factor if shooting with a dx camera. Its a bit tight when shooting indoors. But outdoors you can get some nice tight portraits.

I cant convey just how efficient this lens is. This lens is very fast on the focus and tact sharp ! Its become my favorite walk around lens because of its dependability ! No matter what lighting situation I find myself in ,it performs like a champ . I know the f 1.4 is supposedly the best and Ive used one a couple of times and would agree its magnificent , but Id be hard pressed as a bonified perfectionist to tell any difference in the results Im getting while using it with my D800E ! Ive also used it on my D7100 DX with an equally impressive result ! Once my pics are imported into Lightroom 5 I look at the little things most photographers dont . Chromatic aberration and evenness of light from corner to corner tells me both how my lens and camera are working together. This 50mm prime lens performs with the consistency of a lens that could run over 2000 dollars more ! Never mind the price , because I dont rate lens according to price , I rate them on performance alone ! And this lens is a performer ! I believe any bad reviews of this lens just means someone got a lemon. A few years ago I bought a brand new Nikor 70-200vr and had to send it back three different times before I got a keeper. That took months and I wasnt a happy camper, my point being that there are bad copies of every great lens. If you buy this lens and its not perfect ,dont settle because Im telling you as someone with quite a bit of experience , this lens is wonderful !
