I own several primes in this range as well as the 14-24, so I was wondering if the 16-35 would really do anything for me. After a month of working with this lens I can say it definitely has a place in my bag and I fear the 14-24 is going to be going on ebay soon. The 16-35 feels like most late-generation Nikon lenses: Solid and smooth. Although the body is some sort of plastic it doesnt really feel cheap, and the weight savings is appreciated. No aperture ring which matters to fewer and fewer each day. For me I appreciate having one less opening in the lens case. A nice addition to this lens and other current gen Nikon lenses is the index dot for mounting the lens. Many earlier Nikon lenses didnt have this dot and Id end up making little white tape wedges to substitute. Optical quality is amazing. One of the big differences between this lens and the 14-24 is the lack of ghosting, particularly with night shots and point light sources. I shoot a lot of cityscapes at night and I never used my 14-24 because its just awful with flare and ghosting due to that big round front element. The 16-35 has none of that mess, which is great. Still not as clean as my primes in extreme situations but much much better than the 14-24. The VR is actually a lot more useful than I thought it would be. It definitely sharpens things up when running and gunning handheld in the city. No downsides that I can find. Having a standard filter thread is a godsend coming from the 14-24. Being able to use a standard polarizer and my "big stopper" ND is really nice. One downside (compared to primes) is the size; its about the same length as the 24-70, but compared to the 14-24 not so bad. All in all Im really pleased with this lens. I cant seem to find a reason to take the 14-24 out much anymore. The VR isnt a feature to buy this lens for but its nice to have. No reason to buy the 14-24 versus this lens...most cameras these days have no problem compensating for the loss of a stop and the difference in DOF just isnt going to be that noticeable

This review is for Nikon 16-35mm f/4 AF-S VR G ED IF I reviewed a number of lenses before settle in the Nikon 16-35 mm. Looked into the Nikon 14-24 and Nikon 24-70 and although these two are part of the Nikon trinity I bought the 16-35 mm and I have no regrets. I travel a lot and my camera and lenses are always with me, the 16-35 is one of them, this lens is reliable, fast, very sharp and VR adds to its versatility. This lens works great in low light with still subjects and it is priced at a competitive price.

Every photograph is a compromise (e.g., shutter speed, ISO, f/stop), every piece of equipment is a compromise (e.g., cost, weight, capabilities). For what I like to do, this lens is perfection. Nikon offers quite a few similar lenses, so you might want to shop carefully. Having said that, I believe that anyone who purchases this lens will not be disappointed. A couple of features that I simply HAD to have: (a) Nano Crystal Coat; (b) VR; (c) Compatibility with my D850; and (especially) Image Quality Caution: Double check the weight of this lens. It may be a bit heavy for some folks.

Nikon has historically made its name for its great lenses. Their cameras are good but so are a lot of other manufacturers. What sets Nikon apart for me is their glass. I have been shooting for well over 40 years, first with film and later with digital. The beauty of the Nikon 16-35mm is its great performance in smaller, lighter package than the wide-angle lens it is replaces. I use mine on a D4S and it delivers gorgeous images. I shoot both outdoor travel photos and studio. It performs equally well in both worlds. Im not sure the VR II really gives you anything in a lens this wide but its there for the advertising folks to flaunt. It might give 1/2 to maybe 1 f-stop in dark conditions. I havent really test it there just because of the high ISO the D4S can deliver. With a wide zoom angle such as16mm, the f4 speed is more than enough and you can great shots in all kinds of light. Because it is a wide angle, the lens shade is very shallow and wide. That s the good and the bad. It effectively shields the lens from flares but at the same time it is really out there and gets banged around a lot. It is the first line of defense for my lens followed by the Hoya 77mm UV filter I always leave on. Ive already broken one lens shade just from tight fitting camera cases. When you break yours, dont spend the $30.00 Nikon is asking for replacement, just get one of the $5 ones on Amazon. They look and perform identically. The standard 77mm filter fitting is a plus too because the Nikon 14-24mm lens it is meant to replace has a spherical lens that can take no filters or accessaries. I highly recommend this lens.

Im a very technical person and could go into the technical details of this lens and its elements but instead Im going to keep it simple and just say what matters: 1) Great lens for shooting landscapes on a full frame camera. Great field of view. 2) Very very good at preventing sun flares on wide shots when the sun is off center. The lens coatings are excellent. 3) The lens is soft at the edges when shooting 16mm and your subject is close, like within 5-10 feet such as shooting low to the ground, but is acceptable. Anything that is 20+ feet away from the lens is sharp even at the edges. I think the curvature of the lens at close range causes this. Overall a great lens when you want to be able to carry screw on filters and still get a pretty wide FOV.

Absolutely lovely lens for interior real Estate photography. Soft wide open but if you shoot f8 and smaller then it should be no issue. A ton of distortion (barrel at 16mm and pincushion at 35mm) but thats easily corrected in photoshop so also a non-issue. The VR is a huge help for lower light conditions, and the focus is spot on. Great lens overall.

Great lens! Lighter than the 14-24mm and offers a similar wide angle. This is a great lens to travel with. Its cropped in just a bit more than the 14-24mm, but I LOVE the flexibility you have with the zoom with this lens! It performed well in a small room with with low lighting too.

Great lens! Very sharp, fast and precise. soft and natural colors as is the tradition of the best Nikon glasses VR its fantastic! Minimal distortion and no color aberration. not very big and not very heavy compared to other uga. I use it mainly for architecture, street photography and social events, and the results are excellent. It was definitely an excellent purchase

So far this is an excellent lens. Im using it with a Nikon D750. I tried the Nikon 18-35. It was very light weight but I needed something a little wider for interior architectural shots as I noted during a session at the Baltimore cathedral. I wasnt happy with people shots. Couldnt find the right amount of DOF. I tried the Tokina 16-35 but it is very heavy and the distortion made bad for people shots. It did good work on interiors but I didnt like the exposed glass. I previously used the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX when I used a D7000. That lens had a lot of distortion and I basically used it once year for a family group sho that I had to correct in post production. The FX 16-35 is not too heavy and has internal focusing and zooming. Its very sharp and great for architecture and people. I took shots of people sitting across from me at a table at 16mm without much distortion. The D750 removes the distortion that does show at 16mm and it is not a problem at 24mm. I compared it in a store with the Nikon 14-24. I saw a lot of distortion of people with that lens but a lot less on interior straight lines. It was slightly sharper than the 16-35, but not $1000 sharper and once again, at 16mm the d750 removed the distortion in camera. All in all this is a great compromise in weight with the 18-35 and in sharpness with the 14-24 at a reasonable price. I am happy so far.
