So, Im not a big camera person. If youre looking for that type of review, keep scrolling. If you want an amateurs opinion, youre in luck! We did a little bit of reading and found that our zoom lenses that came with the camera are quite convenient, but may not be optimal for a number of reasons, such as sharpness, aperature, and speed (just google "benefits of a prime lens" and youll find all the resources you could want). So we went looking for a simple prime lens for beginners and found that this was the overwhelming recommendation. While the price seemed a little high at first given the total price of our DSLR, after some research I found that it was very good value for what you get. Weve used it a couple of times and gotten good photos with it, but Ill need to become a better photographer before I really can appreciate the benefits. TLDR; Gotten your camera starter kit with a zoom lens and looking to expand? Great first purchase to start learning more. PS. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it came with a hood. Not something that I use a lot, but it was nice to get an accessory with it!

Arrived on time & in great safe packaging. I was really excited to get this lens. It would be my first lens purchase aside from my kit lenses. WOW it really blows those out of the water! It is a prime lens, that means its not zoomable. You must zoom with your feet! I am a beginner photographer and needed my photos to look a little more professional. Very pleased with this lens! I have attached 3 sample photos!

Excelente lens for night photography (astrophotography) which is what I was looking for. I have a nikon d3400 paired with this lens. Affordable solution combination between lense and camera. f1.8 20 seconds shutter speed. I live in city with lots of light pollution, but was still able to capture them. Highly recommended.

Absolutely loving this lens! A good quality lens can be VERY expensive, this lens is not (not expensive that is). Can you buy a better lens? Absolutely. Can you buy a better lens at this price point? I doubt it. Im currently using this lens on a Nikon D7200 and couldnt be happier with the pictures its producing. The best part? Fantastic low light performance. I keep taking pictures as Im thinking to myself "yeah, Im going to need to use a flash if I want this one to come out..." and then when I take a look at the picture I"m like "where in the #&%@ did all that light come from?!?!"

Ill spare you a ridiculously long review. You cant find a better lens for under $200. Seriously, buy it if youre in the market for a 35mm prime lens. W/ a 1.8 aperture, it shoots absolutely well in low light. Shots are much less "noisy" at the same ISO settings with my other lenses (3.5 & 2.8) Auto focus is a bit tricky if the light is too low. Two thumbs up!!!

Great lens, speaking as a newcomer to the wide world of photography. This should be the first stop for anyone with a new entry-level Nikon who wants to graduate from their kit lens and has an artistic eye. The bokeh is creamy, the low-light performance is quality, and the form factor is highly transportable. This is an excellent lens to learn with, as the fixed focal length will definitely help force you to learn how to frame and compose your shots appropriately. The autofocus is about as well as can be expected for this camera and for this lens: its not amazing and Ive had multiple let-downs where a seemingly gorgeous shot previewed in situ on the 230k 3-inch screen (o_0) winds up sufficiently out of focus on the full size computer monitor. Nevertheless, this is the greatest possible investment any new Nikon owner could possibly make and I am 100% satisfied with my decision here. What I am very much not satisfied with, however, is how late the delivery was. It said Prime with "Free One-Day Shipping" and alas it took one week to arrive. Very disappointing, but I guess it could have been worse/later so I wont complain too much. Certainly not worth taking a star off; it easily earns each of the 5-stars for the price-to-value ratio alone. Please see attached photos for further evidence.

This lens is now my all time favorite. Have had this lens for about a month now. I use this on my Nikon D5000 and it has become just about the only lens I shoot with. Be for warned, when they say no zooming they mean it. You are the zoom. So if you want your subject to be closer or father away the you will have to move yourself accordingly. I am an amateur photographer and live in a world of automatic settings. I wouldnt know an f stop or iso from a hole in the ground. I do plan on learning the potential of my camera, just havent taken the time yet. The one cool thing I HAVE learned with this lens is I can focus on specific areas and after I am in focus I just keep it by holding my finger half way down on my shutter release while I move my frame back into the position I desire and snap my pic. With AMAZING results! Here are a few examples of the pics Ive taken. Fun fun fun. I so love how it will blur all but specific areas of my photos. Gives me the illusion of looking like a pro photographer! LOL. Love this lens!!!!!

I have a Nikon D3200 that up until now Ive only had the 18-55mm kit lens for. I was about to give up on casual photography because I was frustrated that I couldnt get the photos I wanted, I thought my camera was the issue. After doing some research, I purchased this prime lens. Turns out thats all I needed! It takes amazing photos, very detailed and crisp, fantastic focusing capabilities. I cant wait to use it more and really see what it can do. This is a good option for anyone whos ready to move on from a kit lens but not necessarily interested in a more expensive lens.

Got this lens as a prime for my D300. It is not a bad lens; optics are pretty good. The strength is the its working in low light / evening. However I do find this lens seriously problematic during a normal (i.e. bright) sunny California days. As this lens is heavily computerized, the exposure is often off as much as half to two-thirds of a stop. Many photos come out way too dark; easily correctable in Photoshop via Exposure settings; but this is no way a lens should be behaving like this. In comparison, I do find the Type D lenses working much better. Interestingly, when I received this lens the initial results were even worse; however I figured it is a good idea to upgrade the D300 firmware (attn Nikon: could you at least advise on such upgrades more explicitly??!) - and brought it up from A/B 1.00/1.02 to the latest ones. The results with this 35 mm lens notably improved; yet still remain below expectations - so I am giving it only 3 stars. While the problem persists across various metering modes (matrix, center weight, spot) I kinda figured out how to trick it into desirable results, mostly using AE-Lock button. But - this is NOT the level of performance I would expect from a Nikon lens.

I have been looking to get better pictures of my young children and struggled with my kit lens (18mm 55mm). After researching I narrowed down on this lens and received the package this afternoon. The difference it makes to my pictures is aaamaazzzing! I broke it out and clicked away in the evening. I am very happy with the quality of the lens, the blur factor (am not technical) and sharpness of the object I am trying to focus on...overall super happy and glad I bought this lens! We have a D3100 and I am an very inexperienced photographer and if I can get this type of quality you surely can! I clicked all the pictures with no flash, in guide mode "close ups". Perfect for parents, and everyone looking to take pictures of their kids while they go about their day...
