Im an all around photographer whose interest is in photographing whatever captures my eye. It could be portraits, landscapes, florals, art, and wildlife. For the last year or so, Ive been interested in getting a macro lens for my Nikon D7000. Ive read many reviews on the Nikkor 40mm Micro and decided to give it a try. The price was within my budget. I ordered this lens two weeks ago and have been using it non-stop with wonderful results. Ive set aside my 18-200mm, 35mm, and 50mm lens. Thats how good this 40mm lens is. I received this micro lens in time to capture the early Spring flowers. This 40mm micro lens does a great job capturing close-ups of flowers and plants. My pictures are coming out sharp and clear. Do you hear a "wow" from me? I have taken a close-up picture of my Citizen watch with no flash. Another wow! Ive included a picture in the gallery. This lens also does a great job in capturing non-macro shots. Ive used this lens indoors with no flash and have captured some amazing low-light pictures. Yep, another wow! There is no VR on this lens. Not necessary to have as this lens is lightweight and with much practice, hand held shots are easy to take. For low-light photography, I do recommend using a monopod or tripod with this lens. Reality check: you can only hand hold a camera for so long before you get some camera shake and resulting blurred pictures. As I get older, Ive come to the realization that I can no longer hold the camera perfectly still. For macro shots, I primarily shoot in Aperture mode. Ive found my sweet spot to be around f/4 and f/8. For normal shots, I tend to switch between Program and Aperture modes. I use the included lens hood 100% of the time. Within the first few hours of using this lens, I accidently bumped the front lens against the door. Good thing I had my hood on. Lesson well learned. Need proof? I have posted two floral pictures (Pink dogwood and helleborous) along with the photo of my watch in the photo gallery. Seeing is believing. This is a great fixed lens that does double duty for macro and normal shots. Im glad I trusted the reviews and my instinct and purchased this incredible lens. ** Update 06/16/12 ** This lens has been on my D7k for last several weeks. Ive added another picture of a spider on a yellow daylily. It should be on page 6 in the gallery. For this picture I used my compact SB-400 flash as the picture was taken during the late evening hours. Im enjoying this lens!

I cannot say enough good things about this lens. Not only does it make a great macro lens, but you can use it as an all purpose lens as well. Fast focus, *fantastic colors*, beautiful bokeh. I have shot great macros, portraits, street scenes, long exposures, and landscapes with this lens. If you are traveling light and can only bring one lens, this is a great choice. This is a prime lens that you dont have to sell a kidney to buy, and it is good enough and versatile enough that if you can only buy one prime, make it this one. Love, love, love this lens! Great proce, great utility.

My wife loves it. Great photos up close on still targets. If the target is living and moving around then getting the focus right can be maddening but worth it. Depending on how close you need to be some sort of tripod or support will help, of course. Also, built in camera flash tends to be shadowed by the lens for close shots so plan for other lighting sources.

I bought this lens as my general purpose replacement for the stock lens as well as my macro, when the stock lens got damaged. It clearly shines as a macro lens, easy to use out of the box for that purpose. Macro images are particularly beautiful. Landscapes are also effortless. I agree with other reviewers whove noted that for general purpose shots (mid-range, such as people or party shots), this lens can seem finicky to focus and even a little slow. Im learning to use it effectively on "auto"-type settings. However, Ive found that I can get great mid-range versatility by using the aperture priority setting with an F-stop of 5 or 5.6 for longer depth of field, or I can experiment with a fully-manual combination for sports photos inside a gym, etc. In a sense (and another reviewer had noted this also), the lens forces you "back to basics" at times, which isnt necessarily a bad thing but can be frustrating at first if ones experience has been mostly with lens / camera combinations that seem "fool-proof" out of the box in a wide range of settings.

I use this with my Nikon D5500. I bought it from an amazon seller in used condition. I couldn’t be happier! I use it to photograph mushrooms, flowers, and plants. With only 40 mm focal length it may be challenging if you want it to shoot bugs as you need to get in really close. The images are extremely sharp and beautiful, I’m surprised by the incredible quality for such a good price. Highly recommend this lens.

Great! This is a DX lens for DX cameras. That means cropped sensor only. If you have a full sensor camera, you already know this lens is not for you. It comes with a lens hood and a bag. The auto-focus is fast and responsive. You can manually turn the focus ring while in auto-focus mode. You can also switch to full manual focus. There is also switch to limit the focus. This prevents hunting. Ive had this lens for about a week, and its great. Picture quality and sharpness is amazing. If you are trying to upgrade from the kit lens that was bundled with your camera and you dont already have a 35mm or a 50mm, this lens may be a good choice. It is a great general purpose lens that also does macro. I use it for travel photography and food photography. I would not recommend this lens for shooting portraits.

Its a prime lens so you will have to physically move to frame your image. Otherwise the auto-focus is fast, images sharp, and can be used for macro as well as portraits or landscapes. Surprisingly more versatile than expected. The additional setting on the lens you can quickly flip also improves the auto-focus speed depending on if your shooting a close-up image or not.

I love the picture quality but the focus ring is way too stiff. Ill try to move it ever so slightly because Im up close doing a macro shot and itll overshoot where Im trying to focus. I had to hook it up to my computer and use some 3rd party software to get it to move in very small increments. Its not really designed to do that which made it extremely hard. Maybe other photographers are not doing the same type of work, so it might not be a problem for them, but focusing in really small increments is very important for my work.

I really love this lens for taking up close shots. It isnt as good as my 50mm 1.8g or my 35mm 1.8g for general use but that really wasnt what i bought it for. I have a ton of fun using this lens in the summer with pictures of bugs or flowers. Really cool to play with. Attached is a picture i took with it on my D5100.

As a long-time Nikon user (first Nikkormat with a 2.0 50 mm in 1970) I have always gone with Nikon quality. This lens is a great buy, combining excellent picture quality, light weight and great value. Added bonuses are included lens hood and soft case. I bought it for a trip to Costa Rica to use on my D7100. I had focal lengths from 18 mm to 300 mm to nothing with an extremely close focus. This goes down to 1:1 at about 6 inches. Nikon makes far more expensive lenses for the professional but for anybody up to an including the advanced amateur this is the way to go. Tip: for those used to thinking in 35 mm format (like me) the 40 mm lens is about the equivalent of 60 mm, about the equivalent of an excellent old 55 m macro Nikon used to make in the old days. Packing and delivery were perfect too. No negatives to add.
