Im very new to photography. I recently purchased a Sony a6000 and was looking for a prime lens I could take some good portrait shots with. Keep in mind this is a manual lens without auto focus so Im still learning how to focus subjects accurately. Before purchasing this lens I took a look at some of the lenses sold by Sony and other manufacturers. There was quite a bit of sticker shock! Many of these were in the $250-$350 range. So compared to those lenses, this one is a steal. As a comparison, I took a portrait shot of my friend using the kit lens that came with the Sony a6000 (a 16-50 mm / f3.5-5.6 lens) and this lens. Overall, I like the photo this lens produced better. So Im happy with my purchase.

I like this lens a lot. Look handsome, feels well made, and works smoothly. I also appreciate the small size (its a bit smaller than the kit lens). With typical legacy lenses the required adapter causes the lens to seem larger on my A6000, not the case here. I was using a 30mm cctv lens before this, and now Im getting not only higher quality pictures but getting good pictures more often. It sucks to take a great snap only to see later upon review that the focus wasnt spot on, this lens makes life easier. Also I love the lens cap, I was a bit hesitant about the idea of a cap that just slides off, but it works perfectly and is pretty neat. Im sad that Im late to this party. When I first received my camera (wedding gift) there were few affordable options. So when I saw this for $99 I knew it was a steal. Dont hesitate to pounce on this. Unless youre made of money, in that case you can consider other lenses that I wrote off which start at around $250 and onward. If youre afraid of using a manual lens for the first time dont be, its so much more fun using manual. I actually prefer manual now. I bought the AF 50mm Sony prime lens during a sale and find myself reaching for my Canon 50mm FD or my Helios 55 mm primes lately.

This is a great lens for the price. Its sturdy and heavy (made of metal, which surprised me) and clicks into my dinosaur NEX 5TL easily, no wiggling. The manual aperture and focus does take a bit of getting used to, but since I prefer shooting in aperture mode and fine tune my focus with other lenses too, it wasnt a huge leap for me personally. This isnt even a bad thing, because it forces you to be more conscious of your photography. And with focus peaking, its not even a real struggle. Its great for portraits (of humans and animals) and a decent camera for food photography. I find that its great in low light situations. My biggest struggle is probably that if I try to hold something with one hand and photograph it with the other, it takes a few tries getting the object in focus, since I dont have the help of my left hand. The loss of one handed photography is probably my biggest pet peeve. The aperture ring and focal ring are both really smooth, which is great, but frustrating with the aperture ring since it can be changed a little too easily. There is a bit of distortion at the edges, but the image at the center is really sharp. I appreciate the tiny F-stop of f/1.7 (with Christmas approaching quickly, I anticipate that the bokeh from the fairy lights will be great with this lens) and I also like that its not too clunky on my camera. I have mixed feelings about using this lens in video, since it cant help you focus. But if its set up on a tripod, it isnt too bad. And you can do that cheesy cinematic thing where you go in and out of focus on an artsy perspective on a bunch of objects lined up at an angle, which isnt my cup of tea, but some people love that. Overall, a decent product, especially at its price point.

This is a good budget lens for a beginner and will give you quite good results. Pros: -Bokeh effect is great -Indoor pictures came out quite good with 1.7 -Rings to manual focus and aperture are easy to use. - Sharpness is good around the centers on 1.7. For this price, I think its pretty good. Cons: -It takes some time to get used to the manual focusing after using the kit lens with a6000 and its superfast Continuous AF. -With moving kids, its hard to lock in focus and snap since its manual. So, I would not recommend you getting this lens if you want to primarly stake kids pictures(I have to return it for that reason). But , for anything else, this is a good alternative to the expensive sony 35mm/1.8 OSS and as long as you are okay with manual focusing ,which is easy with the peak level feature in the sony a6000.

This lens is awesome, I have a sony a6300 and have been looking to buy a lens to unlock its beauty. Dont get me wrong stock lens is great but this lens allow you to live the camera. It has an amazingly low aperture at 1.7 The only thing I would say is it takes getting used to since it is completely manual lens, NO AUTOFOCUS. But as soon as you get the hang of it you will be taking pro pictures in no time. I would consider myself an amateur photographer and I would say the pictures I took with this look very very professional, thats my opinion. At $83 this is a complete steal since Sony lens goes between $200-400 for something of this caliber. I attached some pictures I took with it. Also, fantastic prime lens for portrait pics! PS This is MY review I did NOT receive this product at a discounted rate, even though I really wish I did.

Last year my a6000 with my lenses was stolen from my car. I was an "affordable photographer" with lots of clients who thought I should charge more for my work. In all honesty looking back I was sort of a lazy photographer as I relied a LOT on auto focus. I decided with buying another a6000 before I allow myself to buy another auto-focusing lens I wanted to master the whole manual focus bit especially when it comes to bokeh and DOF. I took a photography class and I majored in Multimedia so I know how to do it if I just put the time into it. I found myself very happy with this lens especially for the price! It does require work to get use to it as it can very easily get messed up shots. I get less perfect shots then I do get what I want which is probably more my fault. I feel like the sharpness is not nearly as good as my old reliable lenses, but this could be a matter of practice. However, my subjects lately has been my kids and a few friends kids - so patience is lacking there. Definitely worth the price though! My pictures are of course edited because I feel the colors in the a6000 are not the most vibrant - especially compared to my old T3i. Granted I have only had this lens for maybe a week. I will update as time goes by. I wanted to give less stars as I had ordered on a Tuesday with 2 day shipping and it didnt even get shipped out until day 2 which did not arrive on time for a photo shoot. I believe it cam on the 4th day.

Hands down best bang-for-your-buck prime lens for your Sony mirrorless! Build quality is surprisingly solid and the rings for focus and aperture feel smooth. Heavier than the kit lens so it makes the camera more front heavy if you’re using the a6000 like me. Minor details. It’s manual focus only as there are no electrical connections in the lens at all. That seems to scare some people but shooting manual is not scary at all in my opinion. Focus peaking and focus magnification on the Sony Alpha cameras make shooting manual a walk in the park. As for image quality, it’s overall great. Its nicely sharp in the center and throughout most of the picture. It starts to taper off towards the edges and there is some noticeable vignetting when you’re wide open at 1.7. Totally manageable in post but I sort of like it so it doesn’t matter to me. It’s not as sharp as the 35mm equivalent Sony prime and the Sony has AF but at the cost of FOUR TIMES THIS LENS. All in all this thing cost $80 which makes me feel like I’m ripping somebody off somewhere. It’s a steal. Buy this lens.

This is a great budget lens for Sony E-mount cameras. For the longest time, I only had the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens on my NEX-5R, and while its a solid performer, it just cant give the shallow DOF I crave. Sonys comparable offering, the 35mm f/1.8 prime lens, was too pricey to justify as an amateur photographer, so when I found this lens I had to have it. This Neewer lens is fully manual and has no electronic control, so the camera body cant read or control the aperture or focus setting-- this is to be expected for an $85 lens though. If you dont usually shoot with manual focus, focus peaking makes it easy to dial the focus in, and youll get the hang of it in no time. The metal construction feels solid and the focus ring is smooth as advertised. If youre not looking to spend much, you definitely cant go wrong with this lens.

So, I’m not exactly a DPReview type pixel peeper, so, I’m that regard, all I will say is that at 100%+ crop, there still seems to be plenty of detail and sharpness in the parts of the images that I draw attention to with focus. The bokeh is great, the lens works well in any light because it’s manual focus/aperture only. It has a friction fit lens cap, so if that bothers you, now you know ahead of time. I got what I consider to be perfectly acceptable and useable images out of everything across the aperture range of the lens. I shot the lens side by side with the A6400 kit lens, 18-135, and on the 35mm equivalent zoom on the kit lens, the pictures from the neewer seem better and have far better background defocus and the neewer is obviously potentially a much “brighter” lens overall. Again, for pixel peeping, sure, there’s some soft corners and the sharpness across the image isn’t what you’d get from a $1000 native prime equivalent. Which is good because this is a $75 (seventy five) SEVENTY-DAMN-FIVE dollar lens. It works great for what it is and the pictures it produces are far more than you’d expect for its cost. This lens is definitely worth trying out.
