While this lens offers excellent image quality ultimately I decided not to keep it because it didnt offer me the flexibility that I needed at this price point. Obviously, my comment has nothing to do with the quality and specs of the lens itself. I was looking to fit this lens into my set up rather than buying a lens that would meet my needs in the best way possible. Id say it fit my needs 80% but because I was afraid Id miss some shots because of the absence of zoom I decided given my budget Id rather get the money together for the 50-140mm than work with the 80mm. The weight of either is pretty similar.

This lens is absolutely spectacular. Its so incredibly sharp at all apertures. Wide open it does produce swirly cats eye bokeh, but once you stop down to f/5.6 the bokeh becomes smoother. Out of focus rendering is dreamy and rich. Colors and microcontrast, excellent. It does hunt a bit in low light, but in good light the AF is super fast and smooth. The focus limiter helps. The images rendering is STUNNING! The lens is rather large, even larger than the XF90mm. But its not cumbersome or ridiculously heavy. The OIS works flawlessly, and I can get razor sharp images at 1/20 shutter speed, which is a huge advantage over the XF90mm. The reviewers that are complaining about poor image quality must have received bad copies. Im here to tell you that this lens is epic, and the IQ is second to none.

As a landscape and product photographer using the Awesome Fujifilm X-System, I am totally impressed with this new Macro lens! It is built like a tank, Weather-sealed, with OIS, a fast aperture, and IMHO, it is the sharpest lens Ive used in 40 years of photography! Using it for landscape and product images obtains the best the sensor can provide. Combine its stellar image quality and detail rendition with a solid tripod and good technique, and you have what I consider the best image quality that the APS-C format has to offer! Highly recommended!

Update: I have discovered that the Zeiss Touit 50mm (75mm APS-C) Lens for Fuji X is a 1:1 macro and the Touit line auto-focuses on Fuji X cameras!!! And it is $200 cheaper!!! I wished I would have looked closer at this lens when I bought my Touit 12mm a few months ago as I am a fan of Zeiss (loved the Batis 25 & 85 I had for my Sony A7RII) and have enjoyed the Touit 12mm on the Fuji XT2 although I feel the 16mm Fuji may be a bit sharper but we are also talking 12mm to 16mm. I feel like an idiot for waiting for two or three months on the Fuji when the Touit was available the whole time, and cheaper to boot. Of course, I really like the Fuji lenses and the 80 was supposed to be something special according to fujirumors.com so I may have waited anyway. I will tell myself that anyways. I expect that the Touit 50mm wont make a thunking noise every time you move the camera, bubble and hiss at you like a coffee pot, and focus much, much quicker and sharper than the Fuji lens. Although I cant imagine that Fuji put out something like this themselves. Weird. Well I returned my copy of the 80 mm Fuji as a defective lens so nobody else would get this copy until they tested it out. I also forgot to mention that twice it went into continuous focus mode even though the camera was clearly on single focus, single picture mode. Once it entered the mode changing the focus to C, S or M made no difference. The only way to get it out of this bizarre behavior was to pull the battery out. I tried reseating the lens after the first time but it did it one more time. After the second time it didnt do it again but I had enough bad vibrations from this lens for one life and promptly sent it back. Of course Amazon did their usual amazing job with returns and didnt even charge for shipping back. They are one amazing company in todays world. ------------------------------------------------------- Well after waiting a couple of months for it to arrive, the highly vaunted 1:1 macro lens from Fuji showed up today and I am left totally underwhelmed. I really wanted this lens and have been waiting and waiting and waiting as it would allow me to finally accomplish all of my main photography chores utilizing the excellent XT2. I have a decent selection of Fuji lenses, prime and zoom, and have been pretty impressed with all of them. I especially love the 100-400mm & the 16mm. But probably use the 10-24mm the most. In fact I have been wowed by Fuji enough that I just recently sold my Sony A7RII and lens collection and cancelled my A7RIII and the Sony macro lens as I decided that with this Fuji macro lens I would be able to just use the Fuji system - I mean Fuji has never made a bad lens to date, right? I even sold a really good Canon 100mm F2.8L IS Macro lens as there wasnt really any reason to have it around as the Fuji Macro slayer was going to ship any day. Sigh. Hopefully I just received a bad copy but here is what I havent liked at first use: 1 - The AF focus is slow, hunts and isnt producing the superbly sharp images that I have come to expect from Fuji XF lens - in fact this lens produces images about on par with the couple of XC lens that came with the XT20 kit I bought for a backup. Seriously. (Now the XC line gives a lot of performance for the buck but it isnt in the same league as the -much- more expensive XF line.) I realize that the majority of time one manually focuses macro by moving the camera forward and back and then hold, hold and take the pic but for the price of this it really should be able to focus better than a cheap $200 lens. I had hoped to use this on nature walks to quickly and easily get macros of items without having to do the "macro dance." 2 - Manual focus isnt great either. It takes a lot of rotation to get it focused in which I expect should be a good thing as this should raise the accuracy but it just doesnt feel right. Maybe the Canon spoiled me. I am not a Canon fan boy. I have owned a Canon 70D and 80D that we used for motorsport pictures but I had a pretty small kit of lenses for it. The Sony was our main line camera for car glamour photos using Batis lenses and unique closeups and such using the Canon macro and a MC11 adapter which worked well and, frankly, was much faster focusing than this Fuji. But, I fell in love with the Fuji colors which are very helpful for our auto pictures so I have been slowly moving over. 3 - The lens makes a low, but very noticeable, bubbling/hissing noise like a coffee pot whether OIS is on or off. It definitely cannot be used for video but I wasnt planning on using it for anything but macro. Those who thought it could be used as a portrait lens had better get a better copy than I have - if a bad copy is indeed the problem. It is nowhere close to the 56mm for quality. According to the previews I read this lens was supposed to be the sharpest that Fuji has ever built. My copy isnt even in the same league as the 16mm or 56mm and not even as sharp, nor as fast focusing as the 100-400mm with the 2.0x TC on it. Well luckily I did not sell off my copy of the unique Canon 65mm 1-5x Macro lens which I have come to love. So, I am trying to decide on whether to send this back and try another copy or to buy the Canon 100mm back or maybe some other manual focusing alternative. I am a bit worried that the hiss/bubble is not an issue with my copy and is actually here to stay as I believe a couple of other Fuji lens have had the same complaint. The same for the slow focusing. I guess I will wait a few days and see what other people have found with their copies as I would really like this lens to be as good as everybody said it was going to be.

Painfully slow startup (when flipping from review to shooting) and focus (even using the limiter). Lifeless color, overall pretty blah performance. It’s really a macro lens and not quick enough for anything else except maybe studio portraits. I came from full frame Canon with 9 Zeiss lenses. Luckily I only sold 1 body and a few unused L lenses to fund my new xt2 abs xt20 kit. I haven’t found a lens over 56mm that I love, so I’ll be adapting a Zeiss 100 to the Fuji. I won’t miss any focus speed (I’m faster than the Fuji 80), but I’ll miss the IS. This is really disheartening as I dumped a lot of money into Fuji. Apparently if I want a tele it will either be a variable-aperture telescoping zoom or a fixed 2.8 that performs like a 4.5 and is the size of my wife’s arm.
