This is a very high quality, versatile lens that is a no-brainer considering its exceptional ability to close-focus for amazing macro shots. I have a lot of lenses, but I find this is on my camera more than any other lens. Youll be blown away by the great shots you can get with this lens that other lenses cant do. It even has its own powered ring light on the lens for lighting subjects that are very close to the lens.

This is a really sharp and relatively light lens for both macro as well as general photography. The lens mount is metal while the lens body itself is made of plastic. One thing that prospective buyers should be wary of is that due to the short focal length, the working distance at 1:1 magnification is quite low (around 1-2" from front lens element). While IS is great for general photography, it is by and large, not helpful for macro shots. The small metal hood/ filter adaptor provided with the lens protects the front element when shooting macro. This is essential due to the short working distance, which increases the odds of damaging the front element. However, this cap also blocks out the LED light.

Having never had a macro lens before, I find this to be the perfect beginner macro lens. It was so neat to hear the camera focus beep as i got closer and closer to objects. I never realized how important lighting was to macro until i took pictures without them. The little lights on the front of this lens are ingenious.

This lens is all I hoped it would be! I love the dual purpose of macro and regular photography with this one lens. It also shoots well in low light.

I did not get this for its macro capability, I bought it as a good image-stabilized lens for my SL2. With the 24mm/2.8 (pancake) and 50mm/1.8 lenses, these make a great traveling package since all three lenses are wonderfully sharp and amazingly light. I keep this 35mm/2.8 on my SL2 most of the time. That is it a good macro lens is a nice bonus. This lens is extremely close in sharpness to my canon 35/2 which is saying something since the 35/2 is the sharpest lens I own. The 35/2 stays on the 6D all the time.

After taking several great photos I went back to check my previous review on this lens and I hadnt written one! Shocking because I am in love with this lens. On a cropped body Im trying to get used to different focal lengths. I usually like candid or street photography so the 24mm pancake has been my go-to for some time. Im trying to get out of my comfort zone and this meets my needs perfectly. I also, purchased the non macro f.2 35mm Canon lens. The extra stop of light on the f.2 is perfect for low light shooting. They do have a different feel and different features so if your contemplating between the 2 Id suggest saving for both! Regarding this macro lens I have zero regrets. I highly recommend purchasing this lens. UPDATE 12/2/18 Ive recently switched to the Fuji system (X-T20, X-T3). The only electronic adapter available is Fringer. Ive purchased that lens adapter and am now using this on my Fuji camera. Just like Canon translates very well using an adapter with a Sony lens, well same applies to using the Fringer adapter for Fuji. If fact, in both situations youll often find that they are better with the adapter. Ive always loved this lens but it has quickly gone from loving to favorite. I love a lot of my lenses but only a few are my favorite. The focal length, colors, sharpness, light weight, build quality, price, macro feature, etc, are everything I want in a lens. Canon has some amazing value lenses (50mm, 24mm, 40mm) but this one is frequently overlooked. This has to be one of my top 5 lenses. Even after my updated review, and even after using on a non-Canon camera, as my headline reads; Buy it!

I looked at some of the older EF macro compact lenses (EF 50mm 1:2 and EF-S 60mm 1:1 with external light) and for an M5 shooter, I think the EF-S 35mm 2.8 Macro is the correct choice for me. I tried the EF-M 28mm Macro and returned it because I was not comfortable with the angle of view. That may be because I was originally a A1 film camera user. So far, the shots I have taken with the EOS M5 had excellent auto-focus response and "look" like a "normal" angle of view. Whether shooting with a new EOS 77D or adapted with Canon mirrorless, this is a great 1+ lens. I started photography in high school, 1982 with a 50mm EF lens on a A1 and really like the look this lens produces with the EOS M5.

Very sharp lens, good for general use and macro. My favorite lens out of my small collection of sub-$400 lenses.

Absolutely love this lens! I just got a new full frame camera and I’m devastated that it won’t fit on it.
