Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens

I have used the Canon 24mm lens extensively since my purchase and the results have been admirable. This pancake lens dramatically reduces the size and weight of my Canon DSLR (T5i). I normally use an 18 – 135mm kit lens. Compared to the 18-135 I think this 24mm is sharper. I have compared the two on Photoshop, and in my judgement the 24mm results are sharper and clearer than the 18 – 135 when used at similar settings. The 24mm is a faster lens than the 18 – 135 giving the photographer more flexibility in exposure. I don’t think much of the so called “macro” capability touted by some of the reviewers; however, it does OK and I have gotten some fairly impressive results in the close ups of plant life I have shot. This may be an excellent lens to try extension tubes or screw on close up lenses. The fast lens would certainly give the photographer more options than the slower lens (the 18 – 135) I normally use. Plus, the lens uses the same size filters (52mm) as the 50mm lens for the Canon, and the 52mm filters and close up lenses are cheaper than the larger 67mm I have bought for my zoom. As a landscape lens I think this 24mm is excellent. Its angle of view isn’t as large as I would like, and the lack of a zoom destroys any ability to “crop” the scene with the lens; however, it is a good angle of view, is very sharp, very fast, and a pleasure to use on the camera. After using my 50mm f/1.8 lens for almost 2 years, I took the plunge and purchased this product. The picture quality is great, and if you used the 50mm before buying this youll definitely agree. Not having to stand as far back did wonders to my life. These non zoom camera lens are top notch for anyone looking to take still shots of food, people, or landscape. As a starter lens this product will do wonders for your photos. I can help answer any questions you have but if you love photography i know you will love this lens. Note: THE BIG CHOICE for most consumers is either the 24mm or the 50mm. They both have their advantages but in the end the biggest deciding factor is the distance you want to shoot from. I personally switch between both of these, but for food and portraits the 24mm shines bright!

I wasnt sure what I was getting into for the price, but in reading the reviews I figured I couldnt go wrong as I am preparing for a backpacking trip in California and wanted something more compact and crisp than the stock 18-55mm, shooting on my Canon T5. I have experience with a few different Sigma and Canon telephoto lenses of my own, as well as borrowing some other fixed lenses here and there, so I speak with confidence when I say that this little lens is a fantastic investment! The autofocus is incredibly accurate (as you can see in my shots), and the aperture produces a very nice bokeh effect for the price. In the future I plan to do some night photography and trust that this will serve me well. Check out the sample pictures I took! Definitely would buy again, although my next lens will probably be the Canon 50mm STM.

This is my second prime lens after the 50mm f1.8 STM. I like it since it is a bit wider, equal to approximately 35mm full frame. This focal length produces some very nice natural looking shots as it is close to what the human eye sees. Image quality is very good, definitely a bit sharper than the standard 18-55mm kit lens that most cameras come with. At f2.8 it isnt the sharpest, but thats a sacrifice you have to make for letting in so much light with such a small lens. Stopped down to f4 sharpness noticeably improves. But back down at f2.8 this lens can get a surprisingly shallow depth of field, especially with a close subject. If you are the type of person who likes to post pictures of your food all over social media, this is the lens for you. It is wide enough to capture food without needing to lean too far out of your seat, is very small and convenient to carry, and at f2.8 lets in a lot of light while nicely blurring the background. I thought my Samsung Galaxy S8 did a good job of capturing food until I tried this lens. Now I want to carry my DSLR around even more. It does unfortunately lack optical image stabilization, so its not an ideal lens for video. I tried it, but since my hands are not the steadiest I was not very satisfied with the video results. It also doesnt have the quietest autofocus motor, especially for an STM lens. This means that even with an on camera mounted external mic you might be able to hear the lens focusing, something you definitely want to avoid in your videos. Overall I highly recommend this lens, especially for anyone who likes the 50mm f1.8 but wants something a bit wider. The small size also makes it a very portable lens, and when combined with a body it makes for a much lighter and more compact DSLR experience.

freaking awesome. its pretty sharp for $100 lens.It does have some barrel distortion but that is easily correctable in post. For the money you wont find better in the Canon arena at this price point besides the 40mm f2.8 stm and the 50mm f2.8 stm. Its also super small and light. my 60D with this on it fits perfectly in my back pack. Im giving it 3 stars instead of 5 because when I received this lens it came in a long rectangular box with ZERO padding so the lens was just bouncing around inside the box on its way to me. Luckily Canon knows how to package their stuff so it made up for the lack of attention the shippers had when shipping this lens. No padding in a package is very concerning.

I got this for my Canon Rebel while looking for a way to make it a little lighter and easier to carry. I couldnt decide on a replacement for the camera, so of course I bought another lens. It helped a little, and I found that it makes a great lens for walking around. I had been using a 28-105, but I had been using it primarily at the wide end, so I couldnt see switching to a 50mm prime for daily use. At times walking around with a 24mm can be limiting, but I like landscape and architecture, and this works well for that in my opinion. Its very sharp and the auto focus works quickly and quietly, even in fairly low light. It feels "plasticy", but it does have a metal mount on it, and the feel is probably more due to its small size than its construction. It would be nice if it was a little faster than F2.8, but that might ruin the compact size of this lens, and would certainly make it more expensive. The one thing it has done? Made me more certain than ever that I need a new camera. While marveling at the wonderful pictures this lens is capable of, I found two bad pixels in my cameras sensor...

This Canon EF-S 24 mm wide angle lens is a good complement to the 55 mm lens I already have with my Canon Rebel camera. Even though a 55 mm lens is the closest to the human eyes perspective, there are situations where you want to capture the periphery and not just the limited field of a 55 mm lens. Taking a picture of a whole group of people in a room while attempting to capture a good image of the room itself is one area where this 24 mm lens comes in useful. Landscape and cityscapes (such as street shots) are another place where this lens does a good job. This lens is an odd looking, thin APS-C Format "pancake" lens that has one aspherical element, a single step motor for quiet auto-focus, and a seven blade diaphragm. The lens, like most better quality lens, has a hydrophobic coating that reduces reflected glare (analogous to polarized sunglasses) and protects the glass against scratches. This coating gives the lens a blueish/purplish tint when you look at it. We have used the lens for quite a few indoor group shots, to capture images of rooms and indoor areas, as well as a few landscape and outdoor shots. The lens produces sharp, vivid colors, good contrast, and I did not notice any chromatic aberration around the edges that are characteristic of some wide angle lens. The lens is a reasonable fast lens at f/2.8 and produces fairly good quality pictures at lower light levels (without flash) especially. Sure, I would prefer a faster f/2.0 lens but at this low price, I cannot complain.

Im improving my youtube channel content, and I had the 50mm f1.8, but it has a very narrow FOV with very narrow DOF even if the camera is 2-3 metres away. With the 24mm F2.8, you can get a wider FOV with a decent DOF; enough to focus on you without keeping the camera so far away. I recommend it for video shooting.

I love this lens. It works just like I wanted—as a lightweight, compact, high-quality alternative to carrying around a big DSLR rig. Its a great focal length for crop sensors. Its sharp—even at f/2.8. The focus is fast enough to keep up with my toddler. The only downsides I see have an easy fix. Theres significant vignetting and barrel distortion, but if you have a copy of Adobe Suite and you shoot RAW, you can Enable Profile Corrections and like magic, both issues go away. Take a look at the pictures Ive uploaded. Each pair shows after and before enabling profile corrections.

As a budget option for a 24mm name brand lens, this pancake lens does an outstanding job with its performance for both video and stills. The focusing from Canons STM products is quiet and quick and is by far my favorite. The 2.8 aperture makes it work decently in lowlight situations. The macro capabilities are very decent as well, especially when shooting above f4.0. The compact size of this lens is ideal for travel. The build quality feels solid. All in all, for the cost of this lens its a steal and I highly recommend this lens!
