So, I now own two new EF-S 18-135 US nano USM lenses.....and one new EF-S 18-135 IS STM. (long story, another time) These models are very confusing since the nano USM is often more expensive and marketed as the upgrade. Both lenses seem to weight the same, with the STM being a tad lighter. The STM is slightly smaller in barrel diameter, though the lens/optic parts are the same size. Both have metal mount rings, manual zoom locks, IS, and AF. They both seem comparable in image quality. So which one to buy? Whats the difference? The Nano USM also has the option of attaching a (sold separately) zoom module. It has the nano USM motor which is a hybrid of the STM/USM tech. It focuses about half a second faster for action or fast shooting, but with a less smoother motion that the STM. Also, the motor is very quiet, but does make a slight bit more noise than the STM. Opinion: the NANO USM is probably better for photographers sticking to still pictures or action shots. And who may want the zoom module. The STM is very quiet, and you have to put your ear near to hear it. It focuses slightly slower than the USM, but with a VERY SMOOTH transition for VIDEO. This lens will still serve you well for still photography and action, but is slightly slower to focus because of the smoother transition time. Opinion: If your going to do video blogging or shoot a lot of video primarily, and want a lens for stills too... You cant go wrong with this one.

I have only the kit lens and then this guy because I particularly enjoy taking my shots zoomed in. I plan to get a 75-300mm down the road but for now this camera has taken some stunning pictures! I recommend this as a versatile "walkaround" lens for anyone who is new to photography or is not shooting anything specialized. A friend who is more "pro" than I am recommended this to me, and this is even one of his go-to lenses. It is a wonderful replacement to the kit lens!

This is a perfect "do everything" lens. Wide enough to get the big group shots, long enough to get distant subjects or tight close-ups. On my 7D, autofocus is very quick. I photographed a helicopter flying overhead, and the autofocus nailed 9/10 shots. Sharpness is also very good. This competes very well with the EF-S 15-85 (actually matches overall according to DxOMark), and also the EF-S 17-55 (only one point less according to DxOMark). The plus is that you get much more range! Of course, inside with low light is not this lens friend, but for most situations, this is going to stay on your camera more often.

Im very happy with this purchase, however, I have a couple complaints. Firstly, the focus ring isnt sensitive enough. In order to focus from the most deep to the most shallow depth of field, you have to turn it forever, making quick focus adjustments a bit of a hard task. Also, this is a 67mm lens, which is different from the standard lens that probably came with your Canon.I was aware of this, and its not a bad thing, just keep in mind that the filters and lens attachments wont necessarily fit.

A real workhorse at a great price. I just finished a week shooting a conference with generally horrible lighting situations, and this lens almost never left my camera. It easily handled everything from exhibit floor wide images to speaker close-ups and candids. Crisp images, nice bokeh (I was honestly--and pleasantly--surprised when I started looking at the first images in Lightroom), not too heavy, and the focus was quick and quiet. A fantastic upgrade to a kit lens.

I have been working with an 18-55mm (standard), 10-18mm (wide angle), and a 50mm (portrait lens) for the last few months, but this new 18-135mm has taken the win for my favorite. It is a bit heavier than your average lens, however, I no longer have to lug around my 3 lenses because this 18-135mm sort of gets all the jobs done. From a beginners perspective, this a great buy!

We are using this lens (we have two of them) on a Canon 70D and 7D Mk II. We have a Sigma 18 to 250 mm 1:3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM lens with which we were becoming increasingly unimpressed as a general walk around lens. The images seemed flat and lifeless somehow. This Canon lens is much much better. The images seem to jump out at you. This may be because the Canon camera body recognizes the lens and applies corrections to the image as a result. Whatever the reason this lens feels orders of magnitude better than the Sigma in resolution, contrast, bokeh and sharpness. Focus is very quick and silent (which can be disconcerting at first) and image quality is excellent. As has been pointed out by Tony Northrup and others, high resolution APS-C cameras can be very effective for sports photography since you get the multiplication factor (x1.6 in a Canon) and you can crop to get your picture and still get better resolution than a longer focal length lens on a full frame camera which has the same pixel count on a larger frame sensor. So do not be put off by the apparent short focal length at the zoom end of the range. Pair this with a dedicated macro lens and a wide angle lens for those really tight shots and you have a very good outfit to cover most situations. We love this lens and would thoroughly recommend it.

I got this to replace my old Canon EF 28-105 3.5-5.6. I have a Canon 70d and wanted something for a walkaround that had image stabilization. This fits the bill. plus gets wider and reaches out further. Its seems sharper, faster focus, and quieter. I bought it as used, but it was as new. Im guessing it came as a kit lens for someone. I added a lens hood and have a UV filter on the way. Anyway, it rounds out my lens package for photos and videos as I now have a Canon 10-18 mm, 18-135mm and 55-250mm, and the EF 50mm 1.8, all with the STM motors.

Excellent lens choice. Offers a wide range from 18mm to 135mm. No more swapping between stock lenses to get a telephoto shot. The only downfall I found so far is that the final image is slightly cropped vs what you see in the viewfinder. Takes excellent pictures. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade from stock lenses.

This is the holy grail of video lenses when paired with a camera with full time auto-focus in video such as the t4i. You will never hear this lens focusing in videos, unlike USM or standard focus lenses. This is a good all around lens to use for the casual photographer that also shoots video. There are better portrait lenses out there, but if you could only take one lens and had to shoot both stills and video, this would be the lens to take, provided that your camera is APS-C format. Full frame cameras will not support this or any other EF-S lens.
