This has become my favorite lens. I used to use 50mm exclusively for portraits.

The best lens ever I have tested in my camera. This will remain as my only lens in my 6d body if I plan to sell all my canon lenses and move to Sony mirrorless.....

Finally, an image-stabilized, weather-sealed 85mm from Canon! Fast and accurate focusing (much faster than the 1.2), sharp images, dreamy bokeh with that 3-D pop, and simply more versatility than the 1.2 makes this a winner. This does show a moderate amount of vignette at 1.4, but its very gradual, and clears up by 2.8. Almost as fat, but longer than the 1.2, it has better balance. This is the 85mm Ive been dreaming of, and now its mine!

Wow. Mine just arrived after ordering when it was first announced. I have always done mostly portraits and the Canon 85 has been my lens of choice for about 30 years. For the past several years I have been shooting mostly music in dark clubs. The 85mm f1.8 has been a great workhorse and I will keep it. My main concern was that this lens would be too heavy at 2 pounds but the balance is perfect. It feels so much better than my 24-70 for instance. What a beautiful chunk of glass! Plus, the included hood is just the right length. Definitely shorter than the one on my f1.8 model. I dislike long hoods and this one seems to be about 1.5 inches long. Perfect! Plus the new Canon hoods just go on so effortlessly that I am more likely than not to use it. I just fired off a few shots at ISO6400 wide open in a dark living room wide open and pushing in it is extremely sharp in the middle. I will delete this in a couple of days and repost once I have some shots to share. It is beautifully made, well balanced and looks like a total winner to me. If I put it on one of my cropped bodies it becomes a 135mm f1.4. How cool is that??? Beautiful lens. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, the f1.8 is still a great lens and worth every penny. Happy shooting!
