I purchased this lens to replace my 24-70 f/2.8 as a walkaround lens due to its weight. I found myself leaving the camrea at home if I was going to be carrying it with me for an extended period of time and I didnt like missing photo oppurtunities. I also have the 50mm 1.4 but for me it was never quite wide enough for my use, especially indoors. This lens is incredible. The pictures are extraordinary and the focal length is perfect for almost any use. I have used it for portraits of my son and also landscapes and it has excelled at everything. The 1.4 maximum aperture allows me to use this lens in almost any situation when combined with my 5D mark iii. I have found that shooting with prime lenses makes me think more about the pictures I take and I am finding myself in better positions to take better pictures the more I use primes. I am able to previsualize the picture before I take it and very rarely have to move very much after I am in position. I dont miss the zoom at all. My only regret is that I didnt buy this lens sooner. You can keep waiting for the rumored version ii or do yourself a favor and enjoy using this lens now. As for a previous reviwer commenting about the packaging from Amazon I did not have any issues. Everything was included in the box and it arrived very quickly with no damages.

I bought this lens two years ago, and havent taken it off of my Canon 600d/T3i since. Its worked wonders for family vacations, work events, and concerts alike. Transitioning from an outdoor environment to an indoor, low light environment is a breeze with the maximum aperture of 1.4. Im glad I pulled the trigger on a rather expensive prime L lens vs. a handful of lower quality glass. Despite the focal length, my biggest gripe is that Im often shooting indoors with my back against the wall. Obviously with an equivalent focal length of 56mm on a cropped sensor, that comes naturally. This is still a perfect focal length to start out with, however. If you want the sharpness and simplicity of a prime, you dont want to start with a 50mm or 85mm+, because youll be too narrow on a cropped sensor. The only downside here is that you wont be able to shoot sports or wildlife; youll simply be too far away from the action. I just ordered a 6D, so Im looking forward to utilizing the full 35mm that this lens offers. I also noticed that the focusing can be a bit off at the wider end, so a camera with focusing adjustments will ensure Im getting the sharpest possible shots. With this lens being more affordable now (it was $1329 on Amazon in February of 2014), if you had any hesitations, just go ahead and make the purchase. Youll be glad you did.

This L lens is by no means easily affordable or without competition. I have had it for over 4 years and it continues to be one of my most regularly used lenses on my full frame Canon bodies. Most recently its position as king of 35mm was challenged by the very credible 35mm Art lens from Sigma which has received very positive reviews for the price which is much lower than the 35L. Nevertheless, the quality of the build, the quality of the images from this lens -- has made my investment truly worthy. For those who like street photography, this is the perfect fast focussing high quality glass. Highly recommended.

This is an amazing lens and well worth the expensive price tag. This is great as a walking lens, the autofocus component is excellent, pictures come out incredibly sharp, and can function beautifully in both low and bright light settings. For both my personal and commissioned photography projects, it is typically the first lens I pull from the bag. I am very happy I had this for all the baby photos since my son was born!

The build quality of this lens is top notch. My suggestion is to spend some extra money and get this L series lens. This is one of the fastest lenses I have tested, AF is achieved in less than 2 Lux in a second or so. Image quality is excellent and provides very good bokeh. Pictures at f/1.4 were exceptionally sharp but the sweet spot starts from as low as f/2.2 all the way to f/4. The best part is that I can set a higher shutter speed for shots without a flash and prevent any movement from being captured by the camera. You wont regret this buy!

I have both a Canon 5D MarkII and a Canon 50D...so I wanted a high-quality prime lens that would be a good primary lens for both cameras (taking into consideration the magnification factor on the 50D). And this lens is perfect. When I put it on the 50D, its more like a 50mm, and when I put it on my 5D, it give the perfect amount of extra angle. I love this lens! If I go somewhere and dont want to take all of my equipment, I will strap this baby on without hesitation. I notice that its a little less sharp at f/1.4, so I mostly shoot with it at f/1.8 or f/2.0 and that gives me amazing bokeh and subject sharpness. I am primarily a wedding portrait photographer and love to get different angles and styles...this lens provides me with the most creative power.

The rumors about this lens are true..it is outstanding. I am still learing its capablities, but have been very impressed with the images it delivers. I love low-light shooting indoors without flash and this baby does it so, so well. The shooting distances seem to be mid range for me, from 2-20 feet are best, but I have done long shots at about 100 yards and the images are still very sharp. And when you crop in Photoshop, the subject looks great. Its a perfect fit with my 24L for indoor/outdoor group pics, and my 135L for portraits and medium distance shooting with super crispness.

This is the only lens I own for my Canon 40D. I bought it with the anticipation of taking pictures after the arrival of our first child. Its about 2.5 years since I bought this lens and the 40D I have taken 10,000 pictures through this lens. A majority of my pictures have been of our kids in varying light from bright sunlight to dim rooms and the lens is capable of handling any situation Ive found myself wanting to take pictures of people. Since its a prime lens you cant rely on bringing your subject closer to you by zooming but more times than not Im taking pictures of people in a social environment so they are at a comfortable distance perfectly suited for a 35mm lens on a crop body. Ive taken this lens on a few vacations as well and Ive been happy with its capability to capture most vacation type situations. It isnt wide enough to capture expansive objects (say a building, bridge, landcapes) from a tourist distance. But it does well in social situations and capturing the people youre with. Ive even tried my hand at night photography, specifically starry nights. Wide open this lens does a great job in low light. Granted Im a clear novice and I dont have any other lens to compare with but Im not disappointed with my decision to buy a prime for my only lens nor deciding to buy this lens which has served me well as Ive taken thousands of pictures of my family.

After going back and forth between the 35mm and the 24mm for months doing research on both lenses, I finally decided to go with the 35mm. I already own canons 24-70 2.8L so actually have both covered anyways. But after looking at the quality of pictures coming from the 35 mm I just couldnt resist. There is also a blog dedicated to the canon 35mm 1.4L which provided some incredible images. I received the lens super fast and couldnt wait to mount it on my 5D mark ll. It will also be useful on my 7D as it will become about a 50mm with the crop factor. Snapped a few test shots in low light conditions and the lens did not disappoint. Planning on really putting this lens to the test when I start working on some more video projects soon. I am aspiring to do more wedding photography as well so I know this lens will be great for indoor ceremonies where flashes are not permitted. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a traditional wide angle. The construction is not what you might expect from the L series line of canons but make no mistake, this thing still feels solid.

I have 24-70mm 2.8 mkI, 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.2, 70-200mm f2.8 on a full frame and I debated for a while if the 35mm would be worth the investment with the 24-70. I have slowly been bit by the prime addiction bug and that is what really got me to try it out and I have not been disappointed. It is a very usable focal length full frame or crop and I now find it as my go to walk around lens or everyday lens. For a wide view it can create shallow depth of fields with creamy backgrounds and just oozes that artsy photojournalism look with a very undistorted image. Also on a side note its smaller and lighter then I anticipated for a L lens. For those reasons it makes a great walk around lens, or groups of people. Compared to the 24-70mm mkI I do weddings and the 24-70 first gen really gets a workout in my practice because it is so versatile. I cant speak as to the mark ii, I have heard great things but they havent been great enough for me to upgrade. The 35mm is still a newer toy to me but I anticipate for my style the 35mm will take priority unless I am really unsure of the framing (which can happen frequently in wedding photography). Doing wedding photography and strictly choosing one or the other- I would go with 24-70mm simply because you can shoot a shot at 24 and get the atmosphere of the shot then zoom in and get a nice portrait. For family photos I would go with the 35mm and a 50mm.
