This lens is wonderful. Picture quality and clarity is amazing, especially for night and low light shots. Unfortunately pricy, but worth it.

Ok so I know there isnt a whole lot of reviews on this lens, and since I have used it for the past 2 weeks I thought I would share my thoughts on it. I was really on the fence with this lens, I already had and loved my original 35L 1.4. It lived up to everything I threw at it with no problems. I was originally going to switch and try a Sigma 35 1.4 art lens. I finally broke down and sold my 35L knowing I was going to either get the Sigma or if it didnt live up to the hype return it and stick with the Canon. Well I bought the Sigma and yes it is a solid built lens but aside from that it is all weight and no go. I tried shooting it in low light in my house, where my original Canon 35L had no issues. The Sigma on the other hand struggled hard to get focus and wouldnt hold focus, at 1.4 this should not happen. About 1 in 20 shots would turn out on the Sigma, ya that is not gonna fly with me. At close to $1000 the Sigma is strictly a outdoors lens, and a 35 1.4 should be stellar indoors but the Sigma fails. So brought the Sigma back to the local camera shop and broke down and walked out with the new Canon 35L 1.4 ii. Right off the bat I was impressed. The build alone feels better in the hand. Yes it is larger but it feels better. The focus ring is now much easier to use, and the weather sealing is a major added bonus. It is a very simple design, yet everything is perfectly placed for use. Right out of gate on my first shot it focused with authority. No hunting, no missed focus, it nailed it and held it where I wanted. At 1.4 this is key to getting the perfectly focused shots. Once I looked at my picture I was blown away. It pulls out colors like no other lens I own. The next closest would be either my 135L or my 180L macro. So to be on par with image quality with 2 of Canons sharpest glass is saying something. And I havent even really played with it yet! So I went crazy and took a bunch of shots and every one was fantastic. The true test came once I brought it outside to shoot Northern Lights here in Alaska. Well it performed beyond any lens I have every used for night photography. It was sharp edge to edge across the frame. Every star was tack sharp even close to the edges. Which most lenses fall flat when shooting stars. This lens was on another level. I actually bought a Tamron 15-30 2.8 VC lens to shoot this winter, but I cant pry this 35L off my camera body. Ive owned and shot a ton of L glass (100L macro, 135L, 24L ii, 100-400L, 180L macro the list is to long) and this 35L 1.4 has them all beat. Now I know a lot of people lean toward the 50L but the 35L I feel is a much more well rounded lens. It is fantastic for street photography. It performs unbelievably good for astro photography, and the colors and width you get for landscapes are far better then a 50L. If your a wedding shooter the 35L can be a life saver having that extra bit of width can get everyone in the shot that you need. I think strapping a 35L will make you think more as you shoot. You wont get lazy and just zoom around you will use your eyes and feet to find your next shot. And along the way you can find cool new angles and things to include that you would of missed if you were on a zoom. I made the switch to all primes a while ago and it has helped my shots so much. The extra bit of aperture can save you in low light, and the added lightness to your camera and bag your body will thank you. You can shoot longer and get shots no zoom could ever get. Ok so last but not least the bokeh. This lens is silky smooth. The original 35L was great, but the added colors this lens picks up just adds to the bokeh. Now it isnt 135L good but thats due to it being a 135, if the 135 had the glass this 35L has it would be a monster. But even on a 35 you can get some great bokeh if you try. It will just takes getting really close to your subject. Buts thats the plus to going primes. It is way less intimidating to get close with a primes, as compared to shoving a 70-200L 2.8 in your subjects face. This just blends right in and no one seems to get nervous. So all in all, this was by far the best lens I have bought in a loooooong time. It is on my camera more than any other lens due to a 35 just being a great working lens. If your still on the fence if you already have a 35L I suggest bite the bullet and go for it. You will love it! It is the 35L we have always dreamed of. Weather sealed, sharper, and colors that just pop off the prints. If you dont already own a 35L I say sell your car, do what you have to do to get the money for this lens. It will blow your mind! It does everything you want and does it with begging for more. Im sure on a 5DS it is unreal. Also love the fact that it is a 72mm lens, so all my ND filters work across the board on all my primes. One last thing it has the newer hood style, like the 70-200 2.8 ii, where you dont have to line it up. There is a button and it can just thread on anyway you do it. Much easier then the older hood styles, helps speed up your workflow.
