I love this lens! Im just starting out in photography, as a hobby, and this is my first L lens. - Its sharp. - Focusing is fast. - IS allows for one second shots by hand. - The aperture and focus rings are smooth. - Almost functions as a macro lens. - Reasonably priced. - Can get decent "bokeh" at f4 and 35mm.

Ill preface this by saying that its rare for me to think that a product is worthy of a 5-star rating, as theres almost always room for improvement. However, the 16-35 f4 IS is an exceptional case in which a product absolutely excels in everything its designed to do, and does so at a reasonable price (relative to Canons more recent offerings anyway). Amazon only recently released this lens, however, Ive been shooting with it for a week now and am thoroughly impressed with the lens. With the release of the extremely well received 70-200 2.8II, 70-200 F4 IS, 24-70 2.8II, and 24-70 F4 IS, Canon really is the king of the zoom lens....and the 16-35 F4 IS a worthy addition to Canons portfolio of class-leading zoom lenses. In my particular case, the 16-35 F4 IS shares a bag with the 70-200 2.8II and 24-70 2.8II, and optically, its literally an extension of the two longer lenses. I previously owned the 16-35 2.8II and the 17-40 F4, and using both of those lenses always felt like a compromise in terms of image quality. This is not the case with the 16-35 F4 IS. Images out of the lens are extremely sharp across the frame wide open at F4, improving even further as you stop the lens down. What impresses me most isnt the sharpness, however, its the micro contrast (ability to smoothly render the subtle tonal shifts in a scene). This is particularly important for an ultra-wide angle lens, which pulls a lot of a scene into the frame, and as such, pulls a lot of detail and a lot different light sources into the frame. The 16-35 F4 IS excels at rendering the minute transitions in the tonal boundaries in the scene, bringing out details in a scene in such a way that raw resolution alone cannot do. Color rendering is top-notch as well, and consistent with what one would expect from an "L" class lens. Anyone familiar with the way the 24-70 2.8 II renders on the wide end will feel very much at home with the 16-35 f4 IS. On a full frame camera, the 16-35 focal range provides an inherently distorted field of view, so distortion is something youll always have to contend with. The good news is that the distortion is limited to the typical barrel distortion youd expect from an ultra wide angle focal length, and is very easy to correct in post, even without a photoshop lens profile (which hasnt been released as of the time of this review). Theres some vignetting at F4 at the ultra wide angle focal lengths, but its extremely minimal....certainly much less than I was expecting. This, of course, is easily corrected in post. Image Stabilization (IS)is a welcome addition to the lens. Compared to the 70-200 2.8II, which easily yielded 4-stops of stabilization, it seems that IS seems to be less effective as you go wider. At 16mm, it can reliably stabilize an image up to two stops....with careful attention to posture and breathing, its possible to squeeze out three stops, but it isnt as effortless as shooting on the 70-200 2.8II. That said, the ability to capture sharp images at a 1/2 second shutter speed still offers quite a lot of flexibility from both a light gathering ability, and a creative standpoint (wanting to capture a sense of motion). It mitigates (but never fully eliminates) the need for a tripod, which is very useful when traveling or shooting casually. Build quality is very good, and is consistent with the 24-70 2.8II. It has a plastic construction, which many may feel is "cheap" compared to Canons older metal zooms, but its extremely sturdy and much ligher than the older metal variety lenses. The lens itself is pretty long compared to the 17-40 F4 and 16-35 2.8/II, which is a bit of a disappointment as the compactness of the older ultra wide angle lenses made them appealing for travel. But given the extra elements needed to yield the otpical quality this lens provies, along with accomodating the Image Stabilizer, its an equitable trade-off. All-in-all, Canon really knocked it out of the park with this lens, and I cant really fault it. It excels in everything its designed to do. Its definitely a worthy upgrade from the 17-40 F4, and the 16-35 2.8II, and a worthy addition to Canons portfolio of industry leading zooms. It would be nice if this were an f2.8 lens, however, f2.8 from an ultra wide angle lens is a specialized need (even to me, as a weddig photographer). For those that do need an f2.8 UWA lens, I suspect that a 2.8 variety is somewhere down the pipeline of Canons lens road-map (though, therell likely be a large price premium for it).

Compared it closely to my Canon 16-35 F2.8 II and Canon 17mm TSE under a variety of shooting conditions. For my type of shooting, this one is the best. This lens has the edge in overall sharpness, color, contrast, detail and low light performance due to IS. The micro sharpness is outstanding and some of my images have a 3D hologram type look to it that I could not get with either of the other Canon lenses I have in this focal length range when viewed on my 30 inch calibrated LCD monitor. IS is outstanding, can get nearly 80% sharp pictures even at 0.5 second exposure with my steady hands. Even at list price, this lens is a great value compared to the others on the market and even other Canon lenses. Canon has underpriced this lens to capture market share they have been loosing to third party makers and this strategy will pay off. I am now looking forward to a price reduction on the 24-70 F2.8 II which seems way overpriced because of no IS.

I shoot real estate and this is my go to lens for it. Amazing lens that always produces great images. All images always seem sharp even when blown up. The f4 is not a problem for me because I can usually use higher shutter speeds to compensate. Another great thing is that there is not a great deal of spherical issues, of course on the edges you will see some warping but it is easily corrected in photoshop or just not sitting at 16mm. If you are shooting interiors, I recommend this lens.

Can I add more stars?? Im in LOVE with this Lens! The glass is crystal sharp. The wide angle does not distort or stretch the edges like others do. I adore this lens and the quality of picture I get from it. A fellow photographer borrowed it one day and specifically asked about how much stretching happens so he could adjust for it. I said, "Dont even worry! Just shoot". He was hesitant of course but came back a believer and wants his own lens. I typically shoot with an 18-135 cannon lens. I didnt think the extra 2mm would make that much difference on a shot. Yes, I was shocked and instantly in love! Save up your money and buy quality. I choose this lens over the f/2.8 because of the price difference and the types of photos I was shooting I felt I didnt need the extra in the f-stop.

I love this lens, its a great improvement over the 17-40 I used to use.

I love this lens! It is very sharp even wide open. Reasonably sized and fairly lightweight. Its not super fast because its only f4 but because its image stabilized you can use much slower shutter speed to let in more light. Most commonly compared with the Tamron 15- 30 f2.8. Ive used both and the reason why I chose to stick with the Canon is that its just more usable. I really liked the Tamron as well. Both lenses are quite similar. Excellent picture quality, build quality, image stabilized Etc. However the Tamron is just so heavy! This Canon gives you all the picture quality with less weight. Plus the Canon seems to have more weather/dust proofing. Overall, excellent lens for architecture, landscapes, and interiors.

This is a well made lens. The F/4 is a good value since I use this for landscapes and real estate photography and rarely at shoot at F/4. The lens is tack sharp, produce beautiful colors, and is very well made. Very little distortion if you use the lens properly. It is fantastic piece of photography gear. I Highly recommend.

Ive been looking forward to using one of these for a very long time after deciding to make the upgrade to full frame. I didnt think it was possible to love a lens more than my old Canon 10-22 but this 16-35 is fantastic. Sharp all the way to the corners. Perfect.

Im an amateur photographer so I dont know how to comment on the technical value of the lens - but I do know that it helps me to shoot nice photos. I was afraid to spend the money but...so far Im very happy with this purchase.
