As a photographer that spends a lot of hours capturing wildlife this lens is a must have. Its sharp, fast (for its zoom range), Image quality is great, and color and contrast look good. I use it with my Canon 5D Mark III and have great results. Its really a solid lens that is built like a tank. I use it rain or shine and it has never let me down. Ive included some photos of it in action and photos that were taken with it.

This lens is awesome. Sharp and very quick and quiet to focus. I use it on a canon 70d and havent had any problems. Its slightly heavier than a 70-200 f2.8 but feels right about the same. Zoom and focus ring feel nice and the close minimum focusing distance has its uses.

Its sharp at all focal lengths and apertures. I had tried to find a Nikon equivalent, and failed. The 80-400 is not nearly as sharp. Doing some testing at home, this lens is sharper than the two Sigma 150-600s (even scaling up to 600mm size) and the two Tamron 150-600s. The only lens that is on par is the older Nikon 300mm f/4 ED IF. Stabilization is great. Its light. Wow.

I will make this as short and sweet as possible: just buy it. I took the advice of a professional photographer that is contracted to a division one school to take all of their sports pictures and he told me that this lens performs as well or better than $11,000 and $12,000 lenses so I took his advice and bought it and I’m blown away. I will post two pictures that were taken with this camera and keep in mind that the picture of the moon was taken using only a Canon rebel T6i instead of my usual Canon 5D Mark III I usually use. I am very impressed with this lens and you should definitely buy this lens before any others so save your money and just get this lens, you won’t be disappointed. I took the moon picture from my front porch using a tripod and I took the football picture from the stands about halfway up and on the 20 yard line.

I have been into photography for decades. Most of it just fun and kids sports but every once in awhile, venture back into the artistic side. I have ALWAYS wanted a pro-level lens like this but have never pulled the trigger. Well, I finally did. This is one amazing lens. My primary use will be sports photography so I wanted the extended range. Even at 400mm, this lens is hand-holdable. It is a very heavy lens so for an all-day run around, I wouldnt recommend it. But if you want absolutely incredible outdoor sports photos or nature photography, this lens is amazing. The crispness, the clarity and the build quality are breathtaking. It took me a long, long time to finally make the investment, but so glad that I did. I am looking forward to also using this lens to capture some epic wildlife shots as we head into several national parks over the summer. Ill be able to capture the sweat on the eye-brows of the Grizzly Bears at a safe, non-munchable distance.

This lens was one of very few first released lenses in the UK and pre-dates any magazine reviews. The review is therefore entirely based upon experience and not other opinion General overview: This lens replaces the previous mark 1 model and brings with it a number of valuable improvements. Gone is the older versions push-pull zoom mechanism and that has been replaced with the twist zoom mechanism. The advantage of this is that there is less likelihood of dust being sucked onto the camera sensor. However it must also be noted that this lens does not have a fixed outside length whereby the zoom moves inside the barrel. Instead, the barrel itself goes in and out like the old push-pull design so, despite the new twist zoom, there remains a suspicion that dust ingress may still be an issue. The accompanying booklet sounds a warning as follows: However, it (the seal) is unable to provide complete protection from dust and moisture. Time will tell on this issue. There is an adjustable ring which enables the user to tighten or loosen the zoom for personal comfort. The Image Stabiliser provides for 4 stops of stability with 3 options as to purpose/usage. The hood has a slider arrangement whereby the user can adjust a polarising filter without having to remove the hood. There have been a range of improvements to the coatings to maximise image quality So much for the obvious features. What will concern purchasers mostly though will be its actual performance and how the images might compare with other lenses. ............................................ Actual performance delivered over several days of testing and comparisons: Initial findings are that the lens is able to latch on the the focussed subject quickly and accurately. This is equal to the performances of the 24-70 F2.8 L II, 70-200 F2.8 L IS II, 300 F2.8 L IS and the new 200-400 f4 L IS with extender. The images taken have proved to be well up to imaging using any of those lenses. Test images have been taken in notably windy conditions without tripod and subjects have been flying and static birds plus a range of landscape images. In all cases the IS proved to be very effective indeed and sharp images at 16 x 12 inches at 400 dpi were pin-sharp taken at all focal distances of 100-400mm at shutter speeds significantly below the normal safe limits for hand-holding. The lenss relative light weight and dimensions, similar to the 70-200L, makes it a very easy lens to manipulate and to follow moving targets while being heavy enough to aid stability for hand-holding usage. Further comments: The range of photography has been extended considerably since this review was first posted and this lens has continued to deliver excellent imaging in all tested circumstances. These have ranged from bright and sunny conditions to those of heavy mist. The most testing situation so far for the IS was probably tracking a naval vessel at just short of a mile in late dusk while using the car door as basic support. This was achieved rapidly with apparent ease and with a failure rate that could be described as negligible. All the images so far taken in all circumstances have been remarkable in terms of sharpness giving pin point imaging at 16 x 12 inches at 400dpi in very low light. Images of this size are a merciless judge of camera equipment so this lens continues to live up to early impressions. ............................................ Conclusion: This lens is therefore ideal for photographers on the move who want a flexible lens of considerable stretch for field work without being encumbered with tripod. It is for that purpose that it has been bought and I have no doubt that it will fill those requirements perfectly. I would expect it to become a very popular piece of kit. ........................................... Press reviews and final words: Since writing this, apparently unhelpful review according to a handful of readers, there have apparently been glowing reviews in the photographic press (not seen) which vindicate everything written above plus a great deal more detailed analysis. I continue to find the lens to be excellent and easily capable of being judged as having a performance at least the equal to the other L lenses listed in the review. It is gratifying to read in the photographic press such a confirmation of that experience. .......................................................... A note to the few anonymous negative voters: The voting system is specifically only about reviews being helpful or unhelpful Goodness only knows what you find to be `unhelpful about this review. A negative vote without reason is not helpful to anyone. It does not contribute in any useful way to discussion so no-one can learn from you. If you have a different view or find the review unhelpful then explain, giving your reasons, and share your views in the comment option as intended. Your opinion might then add to the total useful advice.

This is my first L lens. Recently upgraded the camera body to a 7D mark ii to capture actions in my kids soccer games. The kit lens (EF-S 18-135mm STM) that came with the camera shows its limitation in focal length, so I need a longer telephoto lens. Setting my heart on a L lens and determining that I will need a focal length bigger than 200mm, I zoomed in on the 28-300 L, the 70-300 L and the 100-400 L (mark i). Quickly eliminated the first and the third due to push-pull, and almost ready to buy the second for its price and reach albeit with some hesitation on the lack of tripod mount and incompatibility with Canon teleconverters, when I saw the all new 100-400 L (mark ii). The reviews on both Amazon and B&H are mostly very positive, and the new technologies in the lens seem to be resistible. So after a brief self consultation of cost and benefits, Ive made the purchase on Amazon. The lens arrived a couple of days ago; delivery was prompt - thanks to Amazon Prime. I have yet to bring it outdoors nor to shoot my kids games, so I cannot say anything of how it performs in the "real world" - will try to update this review when more data is available. However, I can already say something cosmetic about this lens. First of all, it is heavy. At over 3.5 lbs, this lens is a monster. Mounted on a 7D mark ii, the combination is way over 5 lbs. I am still improving my muscle memory (and its getting better by the day), but I can say that hanging this thing on my neck is certainly not a pleasant experience. Having said that, hand-held shooting position is actually not too bad; I dont think Ill need any mono/tripod during the soccer shootings. Ill probably carry the camera with lens on over my shoulders when moving around during the games. Secondly, the image stabilizer makes a distinctive clicking sound when its turned on and off in AF mode. This is a bit annoying compared to the almost silent operations of the STM lens, but I guess Ill have to get used to it. In live view, the sound from the IS motor is not audible, but the movement of the lens elements can be heard when zooming. Hope this wont ruin the video recording. Third, there is a small opening on the lens hood, which can be used to control the polarizing filter. Sometimes I found this little "window" to be too easily opened by accident; so need to pay attention to make sure it is shut. Overall build quality, feel, and image quality from a few test shots in low light conditions look very good. Cant wait to take it out to realize its full potential, and see what/how the great white lens delivers. Update 6/18/15: Ive now owned the lens for a few weeks and taken it out for a few outdoor kids sporting events. Under good lighting condition (sunny sky), the lens (together with my 7D Mark ii, manual setting at 1/1000, largest aperture at respective focal length) delivers sharp image, vibrant color, and high quality (ISO lower than 400). However, in one of the settings with overcast sky, maintaining the same shutter speed and aperture rendered pictures with ISO consistently over 2000 and sometimes at 4000. The image quality is obviously less stunning than those at ISO below 400 shot in bright sunlight. Well, one could argue it is the sensor on the 7D Mark ii. But I think the maximum aperture of f4.5-5.6 of the lens also plays a role. So the conclusion is that the lens is perfect for sports in good lighting conditions or slower moving or stationary objects in not so ideal lighting; but may push the limit for actions in low lighting (e.g. indoor sports or stage).

Incredible Optics in this lens. Bought it on Amazon with a US warranty- very important point to avoid the misery of buying from some gray-market scammer. Took lens on safari- it worked exceptionally well- plenty of options with the autofocus and image stabilization. For best results, I used bracketing, paid attention to metering options, according to lighting, and used a monopod. I also bought the Lowe Pro case for the lens, as I believe that this gives better protection when traveling to the ends of the earth and you are bouncing around in a Land Cruiser on trails.

Heavier than my IS I which is a bit of a challenge as I rarely use a tripod for wildlife photography. But that is a small price to pay for this superior lens. While shooting in Alaska, I met a professional photographer from Germany using the exact same lens. I have heard nothing but accolades about this lens.

I debated purchasing Canons 400 mm f/4 lens but almost $7000 was outside my budget. After reading reviews and researching camera forums I took the plunge on this lens. I literally couldnt be more pleased--fast, fabulous IQ and built like a tank. Ive gained the flexibility of a zoom lens and all Ive sacrificed is one f stop. Ive used it with my canon 1.4x (version ii) with only a tiny loss of IQ. Post prossesing takes care of that. No need to reiterate all of the other five star reviews here except to say its all true!! Canon packaging inside their box was fantastic (bubble wrapped inside the soft case which was also stabalized with styrofoam). Well worth the price.
