I have had this extender for a couple of weeks, using it on a limited basis. I have only used it on a Canon 7D MkII with the Canon 100-400 USM II. My experience has been that you must have good light. Most of my photography is early morning and late evening and without a tripod. I have not been able to get clear and sharp photos with it under these conditions. Maybe I just haven’t leaned to use it effectively yet; I’ve never used one before. But so far for me, I’ve been disappointed with the outcome. Will keep experimenting.

It gives great bang for the buck by bringing your subjects closer without sacrificing hardly anything in the way of low-light performance or image quality. All USM controls get passed from the camera to the attached telephoto lens. The combination has helped capture the majority of my most favorite and memorable photos outdoors and in.

Ive been in photography since 1969 and migrated from Nikon to Canon decades ago. Ive had many lenses and many tele extenders and all the extenders have been a disappointment. I bought this 1.4x thinking that typical extender problems would be mitigated by the smaller magnification. Apparently this is true as Ive taken some wildlife pictures with my 70-200 Canon L zoom with the extender and then cropped them to one fourth the image size and have gotten excellent results. Its identical in color to my zoom and looks like a natural part of it. Ive compared pictures with just the zoom and with the zoom + extender. The only difference I see is tiny loss of definition. My only disappointment is that the additional magnification isnt really that noticeable on the subjects I have photographed. My math says the 200mm lens is actually 320 at the 1.6 digital conversion. With this extender it becomes a 448mm lens which is a 8.9x tele whereas the 320 would be 6.4x tele. I expected the extra magnification to be more pronounced. I wish I could post some pictures as Im very pleased with the results. Its the first tele extender that has ever "worked" for me.

Ive been using it with the Canon 100-400mm II L lens on a 7D Mk II. I havent noticed any loss of sharpness or vignetting with this combination. Note, however, that since the extender costs you some F-stop, only the center focal point will still work on a 7D2. And, of course, fully extended, this combination give 560 mm focal length, which is equivalent to around 900 mm on a full-frame, so you want to keep the camera very steady or have a very short exposure. Note that it is not compatible with a lot of lenses, so before you get it, you should verify that you can use it.

Picked up the latest 1.4x to test on my 70-200mm F/4 IS. Overall, the halving of light (going from 4.0 to 5.6 aperture) is too much for me, when Id already compromised on light by buying the F4 instead of the 70-200 F2.8, which might be able to handle the reduction in light more adequately. My lens at least has image stabilization, I cant imagine using such an expensive extender on the plain F4 without IS. Extra zoom = extra shaking from narrow angle and the loss of light would require a slower shutter speed adding shake yet again. The image quality is okay, maybe a small bit better than if you simply took a 70-200 shot without the extender and cropped it to the exact same angle... though each time you want that bit of extra reach, pulling out an extender, unscrewing two caps, taking my main lens off, screwing the extender in and then screwing lens back onto it often seemed like a bit too much hassle most of the time when the payoff was so small. If the price was half to two-thirds of current price, Id probably rate 5 stars, particularly for F2.8 lense use. At its exorbinate canon gouge price for such a small piece of glass with so many drawbacks for the lens I tested it on, I can only rate it 3 stars and advise renting one to try with your lens before purchase.

If you have a tele lens that is 2.0, 2.8, or 4.0 this is a must have accessory. It turns my 300mm 2.8 into a 420mm 4.0 with very little loss of sharpness and virtually no contrast loss. Version III has improved picture quality and focusing over version II. Still very slim. Can also be used with some zoom lenses (70-300 4.0-5.6) but only at the full extended range. Remember for AF to work on most Canon cameras the lens/extended combo has to have F/5.6 or greater F-stop. Manual focus can be used with lenses that end up out of this range. There is a small click lock to lock it to a lens creating a nice tight (reasonably weatherproof) seal.

I bought this for use with my Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and I am absolutely delighted with the results using this pair on my Canon 70D. There is only 1 stop loss with this extender and I can really could not detect any impact to image quality from using it (I shoot RAW and post-process with Lightroom). It adds about 1 inch to the length of the lens and some additional weight but I was still able to comfortably shoot freehand with it mounted. This is really an excellent addition to my photo gear.

I use this 1.4x adapter for my 100-400 MK2. The image quality is pretty good and dont see any degradation. However, its a bit pricey compares to 1.4x MKII. The image quality is not a quantum leap from MK2, but the price is almost double.

After considering it for months I finally purchased the Canon 1.4x III. My primary reason was for extra reach on the Canon 100-400L II. I found autofocus to work very well on the 7d II with center point focus. When pixel peeping you will notice a slight loss in sharpness as expected. I’m satisfied with the performance coupled with this very sharp lens. I’m anxiously waiting for better weather conditions so I can get out on brighter days to give the combination more thorough testing.

I use this in combination with my canon 70-200 f2.8 IS II with great results. whenever we go camping in the Sequoias we end up seeing bears near dusk at a distance. With this I can get good shots at f4.
