Bought this unit back in July and I really dont use it much. I played it once and it worked fine then turn the unit off and left there connected to my 4K TV. Today as of 9/14/2018 decided to turn the unit on, the LG logo displayed at first then goes to black screen. Never shows the menu or anything just sits there black. I unplugged the unit for a few mins then plugged back in, power it on. Same thing - black screen. It sickness me that I have wasted money on this garbage that only placed once and after that doesnt work no more. What a rip off. And I cant even return the unit because there is no button for me to press to return it on Amazon. So beware as this unit only works a few times then stops working.

Overall, the unit plays regular DVDs well and smoothly for my 1080p LG flat panel. I have not tried 3D DVDs and do not have a 4k display, so can offer no review of those functions. I have routed audio via optical output to my receiver, and the sound is very good. I also appreciate the captioning button on the remote to help with dialog in loud scenes. Loading is fast as well. The main negative is lack of a printed user manual in the box. I called LG to request one. They promised to send one in 10 days about a month ago, so it is obvious the cost of a 50 page printed manual is beyond the capabilities of their customer service. It can be downloaded, but not everyone wants to print their own manual after spending $100 on a player. Since one really need the manual for set-up tweaks, their lack of customer service on this small issue inclines me to avoid their products in the future. I doubt they would be any more responsive on a bigger issue. The other 2 minor issues were: the very small remote is very hard to manipulate in a dark viewing room; and the unit shipped in the commercial box with no protective carton around it. Consequently, my unit had a small dent on the rear panel. It played fine, so I made no call to the seller. An outside carton would have provided the shipping protection I expect for a DVD player.

Good DVD player substitute for a smart TV.. I was able to connect it to my wireless internet to access my Amazon Prime as well as netflix. etc. My only complaint is that you have to download the manual from the internet and print it out yourself. Why not just give you a copy in the package? You definitely need to read the instructions before using this...there are not many instructions on screen. I couldnt figure out out to update the software, and then I read the instructions and it said you could push the unlabeled blue button on the remote. Also, I couldnt shut the thing off, and then read that you have to take the disc out first. You also cant have a disc in the machine when you update and you cannot touch any buttons on the remote or it cancels the update. Also you need the instructions to enable the remote to turn on the TV and adjust the volume. I might add that this player was not compatible with my old (very old) led TV, and I ended up having to buy a new TV as well. If I had it to do all over, I would have sent this back and just bought a smart TV to begin with, but I was determined to make this work!! the quality is very good and hopefully it will last me a while.

This blu-ray player works fine upscaling DVDs, playing Blu-ray disks, and accessing on-line services like Amazon Prime, and it plays videos from a USB thumb drive perfectly. But its DLNA streaming support is unacceptable. It recognizes (ie - puts the proper icons on the screen) LGs own Smartshare PC server, as well as Plex and Serviio servers (I tried them all in turn), but cant find anything playable on any of them even after they have indexed the library -- all my videos are standard .mp4 (H.264, ACC) that played just fine from my Serviio server on my old Sony Blue-ray unit, so this isnt a transcoding issue. In addition, LG SmartShare seems to have trouble running under Windows 10 - it stalls repeatedly, even after being re-installed several times. SmartShare also cant seem to access my NAS drive, even when I map the media folder to my desktop. Finally, the LG iOS apps (installed on my iPad) cant seem to find the unit, even though they are all on the same wireless network. I gave the unit three stars because for just playing DVDs and Blue-ray disks, and accessing the common on-line services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, it works just fine. But to get five stars it really ought to have a working, easy to set up DLNA streaming solution. I see that some people seem to have gotten DLNA streaming working (but often with problems), so perhaps it does sort of work if one knows exactly how to fiddle all the settings. My previous Sony unit was a snap to set up and had no difficulty accessing all my videos on my NAS drive under Servii UPDATE - After a few days more problems appeared. The unit would lose the wifi connection (in a area with a strong wifi signal), and require a complete new setup, with password, in order to reconnect. Then the remote stopped being recognized, and required a complete power off/power on cycle on the player before the unit would respond to the remote again. I shipped it back for a refund. Apparently quality control is substandard for these inexpensive mass market players. I bought another Oppo blu-ray player instead - pricey, but built like a tank and WORKS. But Amazons return system gets 5 stars!!!

This is a fantastic, no frills, Blu-ray player. I was very happy to find a "dumb" Blu-ray player since I already have a Smart TV and a Roku player. As has been mentioned, the menu screen looks like something out of the 90s, but that doesnt bother me one bit. Disc loading time is lighting fast. Picture and sound are much improved over my old Panasonic player. Overall, if you already have a Smart TV or other means to stream content (Fire Stick, Roku, Apple TV, etc.) then this is the player is hard to beat for the price.

The lg DP550 . Plugged it in , hooked it up ,turned it on and requested we do an update . Fine , had read another review that said they also had to .OK . Did up date . Played a disk , looked through every app it came with . Watched some Amazon Prime , great picture , great sound no problem . A couple of weeks later , turned it on , nothing but a white screen . Tried to turn it off , white screen . Tried to turn it off mannually . White screen . Unplugged it waited about 5 min . Plugged it back in , no problems until 10 days after 30 day return , white screen again . A replay like before . Froze up watching anything wifi . Then it just picked random times to freeze up , and the only way to shut it off was to unplug it . The last straw was when watching Sat. Tv ,, turns itself on , white screen , unplug . Left unplugged . Was going to call Lg and square trade protection plan the next day , since it was past the 30 day return . Couldnt sleep , its after midnight . Amazon says 24/7 service . Called , got service person second ring . Told him what was going on with the unit , and told him it was past the 30 day window . He told me that they would issue me a refund , keep the old unit didnt want it back , and hoped I would still do business Amazon . ........ I asked ," I want to be sure Ive got this straight . You know its past the 30 days , your sending me a refund anyway , and you dont want the unit back ?" " Yes , he said , thats exactly right ! No stars if it were possible for the unit . 5 Stars for Amazon service and customer service personnel !

Nice basic Blu-Ray player. I bought it mainly because it was affordable, had Wifi and a smart phone app. The wifi is easy to set up, but the smart phone app is a little problematic. The app works fine most of the time, but occasionally you cannot wake the device up with it or shut it down. I like the player. My three star review is because it will not work with my new Samsung TV. The player works great on every TV that I own except my new SUHD Samsung TV (JS7000). Other brands of Blu-ray player work just fine on the TV but not this one. This player works on other brands of TVs and even older Samsung TVs. I have an older LG blu-ray that also would not work on the TV. On the new TV it does not put out any video signal. Tried calling LG and Samsung. Both said basically it was the other persons problem. LG customer service was horrible, Samsung at least tried to be helpful. The LG rep asked name, phone number, model number and if was connected to HDMI. Then put me on hold and unbeknownst to me, transferred me to Samsung support. That may have been fine if I was told they were going to transfer me to Samsung. Then I spent 15 frustrating min talking to someone from Samsung thinking I was talking to LG. Not surprisingly Samsung could not answer many questions about an LG player. They transferred me to the TV person who then tried to help, but ultimately said it was LGs problem. Called LG back, they said they had gone though all the trouble shooting steps with me and it was a problem with Samsung TV. I guess the level of support you should expect if there is a problem, is them getting your name and phone number and making sure you connected the device to the TV. If that does not fix it, it is not their fault. Maybe it is just my TV or that model but I suspect there could be a compatibility issue.

First one, had to return when it required unplugging the unit every other time. Stopped in mid-stream, failed to connect, even when connected via Cat5 — just generally about the same level of convenience as the old style television where you actually had to get up, cross the room, and turn the dial to change a channel. Replacement acts the same. Don’t waste your money.

The player goes unresponsive every few hours in all modes. have to unplug to get it going again. Junk. And missed the return deadline. Wish I could return it.

The box itself seems a bit cheap, but thats the norm these days. Overall, it plays well. I didnt have any issues connecting to the Internet. Note, however, that LG uses specific DNS settings so if youve set your household to only use DNS servers (like for OpenDNS content filter for kids), youll have to open your firewall up for this device. The biggest gotcha is that as soon as you connect the Blu-ray to your network, it updates itself and removes the Amazon Instant Video player. If you, like me, were counting on this player to view your Amazon Prime videos, dont buy it. You can factory reset the device, enter in your network connections, and watch Amazon videos. However, when you exit the app, youll notice that the Blu-ray player has updated its firmware in the background and your Amazon Instant Videos application has disappeared again. I hope they fix this in a future update, but since my Amazon Instant Videos app also disappeared from my LG TV, I suspect that something is up between those two.
