Ive used the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 for years and have been very satisfied with it. I use one at home and another at the office. After years of very good service, the one at home recently started having a "bounce" problem with the left button. It was annoying because instead of single clicking the mouse was double clicking, so I ordered a replacement. The replacement is why I gave it one star. When the new 4000 arrived, I installed it and set it up on my WIndows 8.1 computer. I immediately noticed that the feel of the mouse moving over the mousepad was different - it was dragging instead of gliding. I also noticed a very aggravating lag - something my previous 4000s never did. The lag and the feel of the new mouse was so bad I put my old mouse back in service and threw away the replacement. Ive since ordered another brand, since the button bounce on my mouse is still an issue. Its a shame, too, because I was very satisfied with the performance Ive gotten from my other 4000 series mice. But, it appears that the quality has plummeted, so Ill be spending my mouse money on another brand.

I have purchased at least 5 of these. They are good mice but have some issues after a while. Mine go through batteries at a rate of about 1 AA a month per mouse. If you turn them off when youre not using them they do last longer but I rarely remember to do that. The sensor area is clean and the surfaces are not causing the mouse to be constantly active, so thats not what is causing the battery drain as far as I can tell. They just seem to use batteries faster as they get older (they probably accumulate dust inside). Anyways, they last about 2 years or so.. the rubber on the sides comes loose after about that long and the rubber on the wheel comes off eventually.. But 2 years isnt too bad. Its a nice comfortable mouse and I like the additional side button. It also has a fairly quiet click and no noise on the mouse wheel. That along with the grip material on the sides, makes it a really nice mouse.

After 7 months of use in my home office, this mouse has developed a catch on the scroll wheel. It seems to involve a deformation of the rubber ring, as cleaning did not have any effect. I still love the fit of this mouse and hope to keep using this model, so I contacted Microsoft to look into warranty support. Unfortunately their only listed contact option is to call the number for the Microsoft Supplemental Parts team. I called the 1-800 number and waited 22 minutes for a CS agent. There was no update of waiting time expected and so I was essentially held hostage listening to the awful hold music which was frequently interrupted by sales pitch recordings. It took 14 minutes for the CS agent to read all of the warranty information to me and to gather my info. Okay, that was only 36" of my time so far. But now I have to email a PDF of my receipt, wait for warranty validation, and then pay to send the defective mouse in to Microsoft. (Plus package it and take it to the post office.) All of this hassle for a device that cost $16.95. I am happy I bought a spare MS 4000 mouse, as it will take at least 2 weeks for a replacement to arrive as Microsoft doesnt have any in stock. In summation, Microsoft has made obtaining the promised warranty service so difficult as to barely be worth the time for lower cost items. This is not the way corporations should treat their customers. I really like how this mouse feels in my hand, except that it takes a little force to hold down the left button while dragging and I have a repetitive use hand injury. Of course, a mouses fit will vary with a persons grip style and anatomy. The shape is only a little different from the 3500, but it fits me so much better than that model. I had some issues with Windows 10 putting my system into a partial sleep mode and then not recognizing the mouse upon waking. I think the May 2016 update had a fix for that issue, but I had changed all of the sleep and hibernate settings before that update rolled out. I use this mouse with Photoshop and it feels nice and tracks well, but I have assigned a keyboard key to also act as a left-click mouse switch to help reduce my right hand pain. Now I just hold down the tilde key with my left hand while moving the mouse with my right and I am nearly pain-free.

Ive had this mouse for the better part of two years, and for the most part, Ive been quite happy with it. Its nice and portable, not too big, not too small. It fits comfortably in the hand, and the extra button is nice. The materials (plastic and rubber) arent the greatest, but it holds together well enough; Ive dropped it more times than I care to count, and it keeps on kicking. The RF receiver is fairly strong, and works well from across the room. My only complaint is the scroll wheel, which went bad on me after about a year. The problem is that the wheel has a plastic wheel with a rubber band adhered to it for grip, but that rubber band eventually came loose and made the scroll wheel all but unusable. For that reason I"m currently looking for a replacement, but this item certainly served me well while it lasted.

There is some confusion regarding counterfeit mice being sold here on Amazon. At first I thought my mouse was counterfeit because it has no Microsoft hologram on the bottom of it and the logo on the top of the mouse is different. However, after some online research, it appears Microsofts logo on their mice has indeed changed. The mice being sold from their official store have this same, more simple logo. This also makes me believe that they no longer put holograms on their products, except on their software. I am not exactly sure if I am correct with my theory, but I am going to purchase another identical mouse from a big box store and I will report back on what I find. Update: This product is a genuine Microsoft product (the one sold directly from Amazon anyway). The logo font has changed on newer devices. There is no hologram on the bottom and I think most Microsoft devices are now being sold like that. Other thoughts: I gave 4 stars because I do like the mouse and it is slightly bigger than the 3500 I had, which lasted me about 6 years - the on/off switch is starting to have an issue, so I bought this one to replace it. Hopefully it holds up over time.

Just received my new WMM4K from Amazon - been using these little critters for years and generally replacing them when I lose dongles. This was the first replacement I recall for one thats stopped working. Well, this one works great -- but the chassis has been severely cost-reduced. Overall heft is somewhat lighter, the rubberized sides feel cheaper and the top plastic feels cheaper. Buttonpress has a cheaper feel too. Im sure itll work about the same but just doesnt feel quite so nice in the hand. WHY MUST YOU COST-REDUCE THIS STUFF, MANUFACTURERS?! Id gladly pay an extra $5 for the same quality to which Ive become accustomed. Two stars because the thing still seems to work well... but Im pretty sure it wont last as many years as did its predecessor.

I own 3 of these and bought a 4th for a friend as a gift. With Microsofts Mouse and Keyboard software downloaded to your computer, this mouse will do anything that the more expensive ones will do. It is NOT a gaming mouse or anything like that. But it IS, highly programmable with the above mentioned software (FREE) downloaded to your computer. It is small and fits beautifully in your hand. Glides effortlessly over ANY SURFACE. You dont need a mouse pad for this mouse to track correctly. I have tried trackballs, wired mice, and a plethora of pointing devices over the years. I love this one because of its programmable features and its size. Its wireless capability makes it perfect for desktop or laptop. Take it anywhere you go. Download the free Microsoft Keyboard Center, plug in the dongle (supplied with the mouse). The mouse will be instantly recognized and allow you to program it for YOUR desires. Battery is supplied in the packaging. The price is perfect.

After having the scroll wheel rubber falling apart and making the mouse unusable after 14 months ( Customer service was adamant that it was 2 months out of warrantee and refused to replace it), I gave in and bought another Model 4000 because I like other things about the mouse. Now the 2nd M/S 4000 had met the same fate, the rubber seems to stretch and bind until it falls apart (like I have since read in many other reviews). Thats it for me Microsoft, you will get no more of my business. Adios.

This mouse is perfectly fine if you hold it to the standard of a "budget" product. The feel is fine, but there are several minor issues that make it feel flimsy and low quality. The primary issue is the mouse wheel. As noted in other reviews, the wheel can be "lumpy" which causes it to be difficult to smoothly turn. You can clearly feel how uneven it is just by putting your finger on it as it turns. Another note is that the mouse wheel button will press down as much as a millimeter before it reaches the click point, as if it is loose. Also, the battery cover on the bottom is very poorly designed and its a little too hard to put it back on properly. Its like one of those pathetic covers from the 1980s where if you dont put it on perfectly, it sticks out. One other thing I notice when looking at the reviews and pictures online, is that the standard mouse should in fact come with a hologram on the bottom, but mine does not have one. This suggests that it is in fact a counterfeit. The bottom line is that within seconds of using this mouse, it was clear that something was "off". It works, and it has the makings of a decent mouse, but Im taking it back for something better built.

Update: After a few months of using this mouse, it became apparent that I got one of the cheap Chinese rip-offs, and less than a year later Im having to shop for a new mouse. Ive used the previous models of this Microsoft mouse for years, they are all still running strong, so I dont know what to do with this review. If this were the legit Microsoft mouse, I would maintain the initial 5 star review I put up, but if you get the knock-off, its a 2 star mouse, at best. I am so angry with this knock-off that I am giving up on Microsoft mice. I hope Microsoft is reading this, counterfeit products just lost you a customer. If you get the version with the Chinese characters on the bottom label, return it! See the other reviews here that say the same, theyre legit, the bad mouse is NOT worth the money. I tried to stick it out, what a waste of time and money. Original: (first week with mouse) This is exactly the fairly simple everyday mouse I have been looking for. Ive had higher model number Microsoft mice for a while now, theyre pretty great for a couple years and then they start to wear out, lose connection and power and stuff, but well worth it for a heavy user like myself. This new mobile mouse 4000 is so pleasant to use, just a solid, no-fuss mouse that works smoothly on every surface Ive tried it on. Think Ill buy another as backup, ready to roll in a couple years when this one wears out. Also, gamers and graphic artists, this is not a super sensitive or precise mouse, itll work, but you best keep looking if youre serious about what you do.
