This camera was pretty disappointing for our use. I bought this to use at my work after comparing its reviews to similarly priced cameras online. We just wanted something simple that took decent pictures of test setups and products. This camera actually takes pretty good pictures of distant things or places, probably people too, but Ive never tried. It may work better for different applications, but if you want to take close-up images of things, please continue to read this review. There are several issues with the picture quality: 1. Every picture is noisy. Theres just noise everywhere. You cannot zoom in on anything once you put the image on the computer screen, because anything that looked even mildly in focus is not and becomes noisy immediately. Using the cameras zoom on anything closer than 10 feet away causes it to not be able to focus, which brings me to the next issue. 2. This picture is terrible at taking close-up images. I have to take pictures of PCBs sometimes, or metal housing to identify any issues and this just does not like to take close up pictures. It will not focus on anything, and the menus are no help. 3. The menu options and navigation are terrible. For example, there is superior auto, intelligent auto, and program auto for mode selection. I hope you like auto. Not sure which auto is the best auto, they almost automatically do the automatic same thing automatically. I honestly cant imagine a design meeting where someone said "were going to have program auto where they can adjust a few options, but then well have intelligent auto and superior auto, two modes that are so close and ambiguous in naming convention that the user will never know which one is the best choice at any particular time." 4. The port cover over the micro-USB port broke after about 5 uses. It has the smallest plastic tabs imaginable that are supposed to clip in and hold it "closed". Well they broke off, so the whole port cover just sticks out a half inch from the camera and is a minor annoyance unless you want to literally break the whole thing off. I have attached a photo example of trying to take a close up picture. Sadly that is about as clear of a close-up as this is capable of. Notice the noise around everything that is not dead-center in the image, then zoom in and see that its there too and nothing is actually clear. For an 18.2MP camera, I expected to be able to zoom in on a picture and not have it instantly look like Im wearing someone elses prescription glasses.

This camera has been an absolute nightmare. The best thing about it is that the picture quality is better than average for a camera in this price range. Now for the bad. We originally owned a Sony DSC-WX9 which has been a great little camera. As other reviewers have said, they took all the good things from that camera and got rid of them. Here are the problems weve had: 1. Camera takes pictures without an SD card inserted and DOES NOT warn you. The problem with this is that your pictures are never saved. This wouldnt be a problem because who takes pictures without an SD card, right? 2. The camera ejects the SD memory card at the SLIGHTEST bump or movement of the camera. No getting around this. Take 10-30 photos, check the replay and there are no photos. What!? Thats right, the card was ever so slightly ejected and didnt warn us that our photos were not being saved. 3. Repair service is horrible. Sent the camera in for repair. Three weeks later we had no communication of the status. Finally Amazon refunded our money. Thank you Amazon! 4. The wireless mode is awful. Im thinking most cameras have a wireless mode that requires installing software or signing up for their cloud service. This is great if you have a Windows computer, otherwise, you cant use it. Dont make me install other software, it should be able to save to a shared drive. 5. Picture modes are worse than the DSC-WX9, in fact, every mode seemed to take identical photos. 6. The colors were very yellow, the pictures are blurrier and the time to save a photo was much longer. What happened Sony? How did you manage to make your new camera worse than the old one?

Sony DSCWX220/B 18.2 MP Digital Camera with 2.7-Inch LCD (Black) Definitely not worth the price I paid for it which was $178 in July 16 (& now I see its actually more! what?!), when Sony itself says the price of this camera is actually $84!! This camera is not very sturdily made, its too small/compact even for my smaller fingers, & the placement of the buttons needs improvement -mainly the movie REC button, which is too often accidentally pushed on while simply trying to hold the camera. I purchased it because my old Sony Cybershots flash stopped working & this camera had comparable functions/capabilities & seemed like a decent camera (though my old Sony camera was a little bigger, made of metal, more durable, had a better set up to it). Yes, this Sony has a variety of functions & it takes good photographs EXCEPT for the ongoing issue it has when I take photographs, mainly when using the flash (both flash functions), theres a shadow/ing in the lower left corner!(which can vary in the size & density with each use) Around 3 months after I purchased this camera I began noticing a slight shadow on the screen & on my photographs, more often when I utilized the flash. (And yes, I tried different settings, made sure firmware up to date, reset it, etc!) I use it more often without the flash than with, but this shadowing problem gradually began to worsen in size & density (sometimes it wasnt as bad & sometimes it was quite bad & sometimes the shadowing also appeared in the upper left corner). Ive never used the camera except in my home & handled it with care, so I thought perhaps something had been loosened when it had been shipped to me since Amazon did not pack it securely. Several months in I finally called Sony because this shadowing problem had become very bad & it had another issue that occurred a couple of times -& camera was still under warranty. Sony instructed me to ship it to a camera repair shop (Precision Camera in CT, which theyve a contract with to service all their cameras), which has a terrible record, often Not fixing peoples cameras, but Sony gave me no other choice. This camera shop had it for one day supposedly repaired & cleaned it & returned it to me -& it was NOT fixed / still had the shadow problem. Sony again instructed me to send it back to the camera shop & this happened 2 more times AND all 3 times camera repair shop did NOT repair this problem! And only then did Sony instruct me to return camera to them & theyd send me a replacement camera, the same exact mode, which they did - AND IT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AND ON BOTH LEFT CORNERS of screen & photographs!!! (Plus this cameras access panel to the SD Card & Battery is loose too!) This continual issue/problem adversely affects using this camera / taking photographs esp. of specific things I need to photograph & I need clear quality photographs of! -So I guess I must live with many of my photographs having a shadowed corner AND hope it doesnt worsen as it did with the prior camera!! I can deal with the other things, but this issue/problem is very unacceptable! I dont have the money to buy another camera (nor could I actually afford to buy this one, as I cant even afford even to met my basic necessities, but I require a good digital camera). Two of the same exact camera with the same exact problem - theres something defective with this model of Sony camera & I wish Id known about this before because I would NOT have purchased this over-priced & problematic camera. :( P.S. I included a couple of photographs of my two furkids to show this model of cameras "shadow/ing" defect/problem. Its not so bad now/yet BUT thats how it started out with my last Sony DSCWX220 camera that this camera is the replacement for! Also, as I said, this shadowing can varies with each use of the camera -a few photos may not be as bad then one or two are much worse/shadows more dense more sizable then goes back to not as bad...BUT this is a problem that should not be occurring at all, whatever the size & density!!!
