Love this thing. 20,000 shots so far. Important tip: Almost all small cameras have extending lenses. When they extend, they suck in air. If theres any dust, it may get sucked in and eventually youll get dust on the sensor and some of your pictures may show some blotches. This happens to every camera with an extendable lens. Once dust gets in, you cant remove it. And professional cleaning is too expensive for these little cameras. Theres only one solution. Keep camera clean and dust free. I keep my camera in a little ziplock freezer bag unless its in my hand and Im using it. Before I turn it on, I blow on the lens area to make sure all dust is blown away. Before I put it back it the bag, I blow on it again to make sure the camera doesnt carry any dust into the bag. I use my camera in dusty environments and this method works. Do this, youll be glad you did. Ive read of some people who get over a million shots out of these cameras.

I know it is an older model, but the picture quality of this camera is awesome and met my expectations. I did not want to invest in a newer model since this camera offers all I need. I want to take great pictures in a compact camera when I travel. I do not care about 4k videos or touch screen features that newer models offer. This camera records awesome videos as well. Before I ordered it, I did a lot od research on Flickr and Youtube. I am very happy with my purchase!

About 1000+ photos later and I love this. Im an amateur photographer, ie I take about 100+ photos a day for work in the design/construction world. Significantly better than a $250 point and shoot. The 1" sensor is incredible in lower light conditions or even those difficult lighting days of party cloudy/light overcast haze we get so often in the PNW; days that give cheaper cameras and cell phones a hard time. Extremely portable and easy to use. Has the features of bulky camera while maintaining an awesome size and quick use. Side note: Bought this as Used - Acceptable on Amazon Warehouse deals. Came with all the original documentation, cables, in a sealed bag Even still had the screen protector on it. It had never been used. Only thing was box was missing was gone. Might try warehouse deals again!

My mother likes photography, but she doesnt want to deal with the many buttons and complications that come with DSLRs. So, I purchase the RX100, and I am more than pleased. This takes great photos the FIRST not SECOND, THIRD, or FOURTH, but the FIRST time on auto, and I would buy it again if I had to. My mom loves it, I love it. Its a little pricey, but Sony is the best in the sensor game for a reason.

I cant gush enough about this camera. But, its not for everyone. This is not a point and shoot beginners camera. You wont find long zooms, easy social media sharing (although there is more of that in the mk 2, but not very easy to use) or other things a casual consumer is used to finding in little pocket digital cameras. But for a pro, this is the camera that youll always have with you. With a 1" sensor, a Ziess lens, and 20mp of resolution, this often serves as my first camera. In may ways it rivals my Canon 1Ds mk3. With modern processing software you can mitigate what little noise there is, the lens is sharp as a tack... just amazing, and the tiny size beats the competition hands down. My old go-to "pocket" camera was a Canon G series (10-12). As good as those cameras are, they dont hold a candle to the RX. As for the interchangeable little mirrorless cameras, I wasnt looking for a replacement for my 1Ds3, I wanted something I could carry with me, preferably in my pocket and still made RAW files, and had a decent little zoom. The RX100 did all that and far more. If you want to quibble, I can say that Sony cant write software to save their lives. The menu system, while not as bad as some, is still a pain to use. Too many things are buried and hard to access (manual focus???). The "ring" on the front of the camera seemed like a good idea, but has proved to be mostly unusable. I look forward to seeing what evolves with this camera.

This camera has been glitchy from day one but we persisted. Now it has taken to draining fully charged batteries within hours, when the camera is not even turned on. This model seems to be on every "best point and shoot" list so perhaps we got a lemon, but I have to say that most of the pics we did get when it wasnt bugging out on us were only marginally better than those with an iPhone 6... Disappointed in pretty much every way with this purchase.

There are several versions of this camera, the newer ones have wifi and other features however their picture quality isnt much better than the pictures from this camera and they cost much more. My concern when buying this camera was the zoom. It is only 3.6 when you can buy sony cameras that are cheaper with much bigger zooms e.g. the Sony - Cyber-shot DSC-HX80. However if you set the picture size to be suitable for an 8 by 11 picture and you turn on the clear zoom menu item, you get 14x zoom and whatever degradation in image quality there is, is not noticeable. If you are willing to degrade the image quality slightly you can use the digital zoom and get even more zoom. Another concern I had was getting good quality pictures in low light. In the past I had a cheaper canon which had problems focusing in low light on distant objects. I havent had a chance to test this in an auditorium but at home it is quite good.. I read that it is easy to manually focus with a ring in the front but I havent learned that feature yet. I bought this camera when my canons zoom lense wouldnt retract anymore. Apparently that is a known problem with Canon cameras. All zooms can get dust in them which can gum up the works so its good to keep dust off any camera. My camera did not come with a wrist strap even though it was supposed to and sony insisted I buy another one. It was only a few bucks but that doesnt bode well for customer service.

The review in the Wall Street Journal the other day was very good in terms of explaining the pros and cons of this camera. There have been a number of issues with the menu and how many menu items there are. Having had numerous digital cameras, I can tell you that one MUST READ the Manual. The manual that came in the box called the guide (I guess) is not terribly impressive. The 200 page manuals I got with several Pentaxs over the years were very good and required me to study them for a month. Id like a nice 200 page manual with the RX100. With practice you can make some great photographs with cameras like this one. It takes practice. Its ability to handle low light photos is amazing. I turned off the lights in my living room. There was enough illumination from the porch lights to give me a few amazing photos of lamps and chairs in the living room. My fancy Canon can do that if and only if I play games with the settings using a tripod. On a long walk today I managed to get some awesome photos with the RX100. It does everything I want. My next step is to study up on how to use tmanual and program modes. My three issues: 1) I have had a devil of a time to get the panorama setting to work. Out of 13 tries I got it to work once. It keeps coming up with an error or something that says (a) moving too slow, (b) not so fast, and (c) keep it level. One Youtube movie showed a guy flashing the thing over a backyard with no particular concern for level and it worked great. Go figure. I shall keep trying. Of course, I can do panoramas using multiple shots and merging in Photoshop. 2) the other is the manual. 3) What does T* mean? One owner suggested keeping your camera in a plastic bag. I keep mine in a 1 qt zip lock freezer bag. While I have the money, the RX100 meets all of my needs for fair weather photography. I love my large Canon, but it is a pain to wear around my neck. This is a darned fun pocket camera to shoot. Lastly, taking good pictures is all about EYE. A camera with a hundred features cannot make up for rotten photographic talent. I see lots of lousy iPhone photos, which will only improve when Apple makes a phone that floats in the air and uses an algorithm to take exceptional pictures. If you want a camera as a status symbol then go buy a $10,000 Hasselblad. Even it will take rotten pictures if in the wrong hands. I finally located the manual for the RX100. It is under documents. Sony. Com and then go from there.

I am writing this review after using it for more than 2 years. Its a great camera and this really should be a 5 star review, but I am playing devils advocate and would like to give people a warning about a design defect that will eventually show up after the warranty expires. To send it for the repair, you would need to spend $300-$500. The error message you will be receiving is "Turn the power off and then on", and the lens wont retract completely. At that point the camera is not usable until you fix it. There are some workaround but it cannot be easily fixed. It is a great camera but unfortunately has a poor reliability due to the design defect.
