Olympus TG-870 Tough Waterproof Digital Camera (Black)

Great photos. Waterproof and durable. I was a bit surprised at how heavy the camera is. I guess that is the tough case. That may be an issue if you want to lug it around the ski slopes. Dont take out the warranty. Is not covered by Amazon but a third party called Warrantech. The registration process is nightmare. I thought I was all signed up but they send you and a goose chase of e-mails and web sites with links that dont work. I still have not managed to register the warranty.

This camera takes the best pictures I have seen in a waterproof point & shoot. I have had 4 cameras before this from different makes and this is by far better. However, on its first snorkel trip it leaked through the lens and became inoperable within hours. Thankfully the warranty program at Olympus was easy and I got a new camera. Just too bad it was a big damper on my trip. I love the flip display for taking selfies! The Wifi is such a good feature too since everyone wants pictures on their phones immediately.

Purchased this camera to take on a Florida vacation. In terms of construction and toughness - we used it in the salt water at an ocean beach in Miami, several hotel pools and had no issues with it. The camera held up against everything we threw at it, including my 9 and 5 year old kids =) The pictures we got off the camera were actually surprisingly awesome. In daytime light, the pictures are great. In the water, things also were better than expected. Lower light situations the camera seemed to struggle a bit but that might be to be expected for a camera in this price range. One feature I like playing with is the time lapse feature. Its pretty interesting to set up an interesting scene and let it capture for a while and then see what you get in the end.

I took this camera to Thailand and Cambodia among other local, U.S. locations. It managed not to get ruined in the high humidity that zapped my last camera in Cozumel. My only complaint would be, for this price, I would expect a higher zoom. My last camera that cost less than half of this one had about twice the zoom capability and I miss that feature. Overall, Im happy enough with it. It appears durable. I have not tried the waterproof feature yet because the directions say you have to soak it in a bucket of clear water for a period of time after use in salt water...and that just isnt really practical when traveling. If anybody else has used it in salt water, comment and let me know how that works for you. Its a smidge heavy to have around my neck, but when I travel, if the camera isnt right there...I wont take photos. Too much hassle to get it out of my pack, out of the case, take a picture and put it away. I took over 1000 photos with it on my November Asia trip.

Update 6-2-2017: Camera started to fog up really bad during Trip to Asia in April- May 2017. The screen would look gray or dark with white lines or just like looking through a haze. The odd thing is i took photos despite of it and rather, blindly-- and when i check the sd card -- the photos were not distorted at all. Leads me to think that the LCD seal is broken (?). I contacted customer service who responded within 48 hours/email and advised i send the camera for inspection/repair/cost-to-be-determined (since its over its 90-day warranty). Hmmmm maybe i should just get a new on & get an extended warranty this time. And perhaps a different color. Mind you, the green one still works like a charm ! 2016: I have to return my first one due to a leak after using it during caving/underground river activity in Mexico-- Its a good thing my memory card was still working after that. Very stressful :( The GOOD thing-- Seller replaced the item free of charge (and after i returned the damaged product). Now I am "breaking in" my new one to see HOW Tough it can get. I bought a green one for a friend as a gift and that one (if the color has anything to do with it) is working great since day 1.

I used this camera for 2 weeks in salt water, I have not had any issues with it. It also takes good pictures out of the water. Battery life is good. I can leave it on for most of 1-1 1/2 hour snorkel swim and not run the battery out. I ordered the green model but received black, but that did not change performance. The only problem I have not found an answer for is when I use it in underwater mode, every time i turn it on it enables the flash. I have to manually disable the flash. As I use this snorkeling, the flash lights up all the bubbles. There may be a way to change this, but I have not found it yet. Nice compact camera for outdoor and wet use.

We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the photos. Brought this with us to Disney and used on water rides and in the pool. Camera is nice and sturdy and settings were pretty easy to use. I just wish it had better low light settings. Overall, its a great camera. If you plan to use aggressively throughout the day though, would suggest getting an additional battery.
