I bought this on Amazon to update from a Coolpix L20 that still takes great pictures. I also own a Nikon D3200, but wanted a small camera that was easy to carry in my purse or a pocket. The camera, when it came, was much larger and heavier than I expected. This takes excellent pictures in the house. Without a viewfinder, I am unable to see what I am taking a picture of outside, unless it is a cloudy day. Within two months, the lens cover was sticking. My husband, who is mechanical, has been able to release it each time, but it is unhandy. The design of the lens cover is fragile, and I have to keep the camera in a case in order to keep it in my purse without potentially separating the segments of the lens cover. The camera warrenty is stated to be for one year. This takes good pictures. Not equivalent to the D3200, IMO, but good. Its harder to keep the focus while holding the camera away from the body, so it takes getting used to. The battery life is excellent if using it only for pictures, but to charge the battery you must have it in the camera. I was expecting a separate charger similar to the D3200. Its too large and too fragile to be the good take-it-with-you-at-all-times camera I was looking for. Im still relying on the Coolpix L20. All in all, a fair camera, but not durable or convenient. Im looking for something smaller, lighter, and more durable with a viewfinder option that allows me to compose pictures, rather than guess what Im shooting toward. I wouldnt recommend this camera.

I took over thousand pictures and took it to Italy before writing this review. Outstanding features for me are: the flexible fold-out monitor screen, GPS recording, time lapse recording, Wireless transfer ability, panorama mode, and the extensive pre-programmed scene selections. BUT photo quality is hindered by the small sensor size. I could not get the P program mode to adjust. But everything is a tradeoff; since it fits in my pocket and has great features, I can only dream of improved optical quality. CONS: The P program mode does not adjust properly (need firmware upgrade) The battery door comes open, but camera stays on, Active GPS location log is deleted when battery is replaced, unless the log is saved. Too easy to hit the wireless button by accident Can not wireless transfer movies Wireless transfer uses a lot of battery power PROS: The fold-out viewing screen rotates easily to frame a picture over / below your head. Also to do a selfie. Multiple scene selection modes offer great flexibility. Built-in GPS, make it very easy to keep track of travel pictures GPS location tracking log is nice too record tour travel WISHES: Ability to name folders - after about 200 pictures a new folder is automatically created. Nice if I could name the folders A larger sensor would be GREATLY appreciated. S9900 quality does not compare to larger sensor photos Fix the P program mode

I bought the S9900 almost two years ago and love it. I have been doing photography for over 40 years now, having started with a shutter priority Konica -- dont remember if it had full auto in those days. Despite the years, I would classify myself as a mid-amateur -- lots of other thing to do in that time. Ive been through 4 or 5 Nikon film and DSLR cameras, upgrading from time to time. I came across the S9900 looking for a replacement for a Canon powershot. I had several of them over a 10-15 yrar period and wanted another point and shoot to replace the then current model. I was attracted to the S9900 because of its PSAM capabilities and ability to control more variables. thought Id use it as the others -- a light weight, small camera for travel and family stuff when I did not want to lug the DSLR gear around Boy, am I glad I bought this camera. I use it now more often than my DSLR. The biggest drawbacks are the weight and size of the camera, it doesnt shoot in RAW . I print my own pictures and process them in Adobe Lightroom. RAW is the best format for doing this. If you dont do post-processing this is meaningless. The camera is heavier and bigger because of the additional features, I guess. It doesnt fit very well into a shirt breast pocket, but an iPhone does, and is the replacement for the Powershot now, but I have a small case for the S9900 and carry it if there is a prospect of picture taking. No bother for me -- it might fit in pockets, but I dont like lots of stuff in my pockets. Flash on point and shoot cameras is way overrated. None of them have much power, and placement on camera, usually on plane with the camera, produces red eye - if you do post processing in Lightroom this is not a problem, but for the snapshooter this can be more of a pain. I use the flash largely for outdoor fill flash and sometimes indoors to get a little more light. Dont buy this if a powerful flash is an important feature. Dont buy any other point and shoot for that matter, or rely on the flash feature on smartphones either. The camera is better indoors than point and shoots because of the PSAM feature. you can fiddle with the fstops, shutter speed, and ISO settings to get indoor shots that you might not get with a point and shoot. This should not intimidate -- the learning curve is steep, and the camera itself gives a lot of clues of what settings can be used -- just like all DSLRs. Ive read most of the negative reviews; except complaints about defects and reliability, I attribute most of the negatives to "user error." They havent tried to learn about or use the features of the camera. Getting blurry pictures of moving objects suggests a faster shutter speeds. Full Auto on any camera can be unreliable on any camera, because the camera does the work and may not choose the right settings for special situations. Thats true of any point and shoot. I was blown away by the pictures I took from the very begginning. This Camera is a little big and heavy, but not much. If thats a problem, sue your smartphone. This is a great and versatile camera. Unless you are looking for special features available only on high-end DSLRs, this could be the only camera you will need.

Great except it lacks really any creative shooting options which would be considered standard in a camera at this level and price point. Im not sure why Nikon lags so far behind Canon, Panasonic, and Sony in the creative filters (low key, high key, color swap, miniature, retro, etc). I though this was going to be my new every day go everywhere camera when I didnt want to lug around my $900 DSLR. Ended up sending it back - too bad, beautiful body, top marks for physical look of camera (love) and I love that Nikon is still making proper flip out - rotating screens. Just does not have all the features Id expect from a camera like this...

Overall Im very pleased with this camera, my fifth Coolpix since the 880 Coolpix model that I bought in 2001 (for $750!). Each Coolpix model has been an improvement over the prior model, including this S9900. I typically replace the Coolpix every two or three years, mostly due to fair wear and tear knowing that the later models will be better in performance and features, Of particular value to me is the ability to select A (Aperture priority) and S (Shutter priority) in addition to full automatic. I have not tried to use the GPS or WiFi or NFC - these are "bells and whistles" that I dont need for casual picture taking from a compact but powerful camera that I can easily take everywhere (including inside arenas where the ruling is "point and shoot cameras allowed, no video or DSLR types". The pop-up flash, while a nuisance to many, is a great addition to remove red-eye and unintended flash bounce from reflective objects in the scene. Taking another five seconds to pop it up is not a big deal! It quickly snaps back safely into the body when not needed. The battery life is not great - it uses the same Nikon battery (EL-12) as prior Coolpix models and does not hold up well for video or multiple flash PIX (both of which are power hungry). I carry two other fully charged Nikon batteries and typically need to replace the first one after about 200 shots. While on vacation I expect to change the battery at least once per day. Unfortunately the battery must be recharged inside the camera, so I do a lot of battery exchanges. An AC powered charger would be a great addition and was standard on earlier Coolpix models. And there in lies the problem with this particular camera unit. Changing the battery resets the internal RTC (Real Time Clock) even though the camera has an internal power source (another rechargeable or a super cap?) intended to keep the date and time accurate during a battery change over. This is well documented in the users manual, but apparently not well understood by the Nikon support people. After complaining to Nikon (on-line chat) and following their advice to "Reset the camera" (remove memory card and battery) and later to "Upgrade the firmware" from 1.0 to 1.1 (a 75Meg download that has to be put on a Nikon formatted SD Card and loaded into the camera) the problem was not resolved (because its an internal hardware problem - probably a manufacturing defect in just this unit). The next advice from Nikon was to send this unit to Nikon for repair, or more likely replacement with a "reburb" unit. This is a brand new unit that I bought from Amazon, why would I upgrade to a refurb thats already been repaired once? What a huge turn off! I returned this unit to Amazon! Caveat Emptor!!!

I bought this camera 12-29-17 after lots of research and it was listed with a Full 1 year warranty. July of 2018 it stopped working and i sent it in for warranty repair. I was then informed this was NOT a new camera but a REFURBISHED one and only had a 90 Day Warranty which was out of time Now i have to to pay over $200 if i want to keep this piece of CRAP

Purchased for our upcoming trip to Norway since I didnt want to haul my bigger cams and the separate bag - worked beautifully! Easy one-handed point and shoot was excellent for all the activity we had - in motion shots came out great from planes, trains, and buses. A bit heavier than I anticipated but really was a non-issue since I kept it (in a clamshell hard case) in my pocket or attached to my larger backpack almost our entire trip. Held up to some travel stress without concern. Great product, decent price. Added two 32G cards and had more than enough room for 5K+ of photos and videos.

Takes great pictures and the 32x zoom is clear. My last camera needed a steady hand or tripod on zoom to hopefully get a picture that wasnt blurry. The WiFi is good to upload photo directly from the camera. The swivel display makes it much easier to get a good picture in a crowd or a selfie if you must. The shots are crisp. I havent really seen the low light problem but there is a low light CMOS sensor.. It is easy to work the settings or just leave them on auto. The GPS is nice so you can remember where you took a photo. The videos are full HD.

Published reviews name this as the top of the food chain for NIKON cameras before entering the mulitilens review game. I have two of these 9900s and think they pre-empt the need to buy a DSLR. The lens is extremely sharp, a long range zoom. The flash elevates from the top of the camera and virtually kills redeye. It will perfectly expose a couple dancing thirty plus feet away. The auto focus is very fast. I shot a friends wedding with these. People asked, where are your real cameras. The results say the real cameras were hanging around my neck.

First things first this is a great camera for beginners or anyone looking to take a small camera on vacation that has nice selection of options. This camera is factory refurbished so it looks BRAND NEW and operates brand new. For the most part it takes great photos...needs a little option tweaking for photos in low light but I will be able to take them. It comes with an extended warranty and a wrist strap. The bad- no printed user manual you have to read and print online but its over 200 pages so printing isnt an option.....theres a ton to read about this camera and would have liked he manual. Doesnt come with original packaging but it makes sense since its not really knew. The last thing that I dont like a lot is the fact that when viewing the pictures on your device the lense opens up and stays extended if your just view photos other than that Im pretty impressed on how good this camera is and how good a factory refurbish is
