I needed to replace my old camera - a Panasonic Lumix - because of persistent issues of dust on the CCD and in the lens, one of the most common complaints for the entire line. I have had Nikon SLR and DSLR cameras in the past but I decided to get the Canon this time, due to good reviews. The camera is solid, feels good in my hand. However, it is not the most easy to use camera I have ever had, and MUCH more complex that the shooting menu for the Lumix line. Let me first say that the lens quality and picture quality is excellent. I dearly love the 40X telephoto capability and while I would like an eyepiece the LCD screen is pretty bright and generally easy to see outdoors. I had several specific complaints, the most important being that in Shutter mode you cannot set the shutter speed and assume that the camera will not override your choice. This IS what shutter mode is supposed to do, right? And it is critical to one of the more common tasks that I have with this camera. After REPEATED emails with the service people I finally ended up with a straightforward comment from a technician that confirmed that the camera is built to override my setting. My concern was that there was a defect with the camera. The second major area of disappointment is the Macro mode, which I have yet to figure out. It does not seem to actually do anything in terms of getting me closer to my subject. Although it is too early to tell about long term lens integrity, I would have high hopes based on the feel . I am still trying to decide if the deficiencies are worthy keeping the camera.

Downsized from my DSLR because I was tired of hauling it around. Couldnt be happier with this camera. Takes great shots; love the selfie feature. Great to not just use my phone camera all summer!

Ive been taking pictures for 45 years with a variety of models from my first Nikkormat (best I could afford) to my current SLR. Like many people I carry a point-and-shoot in my pocket for running around and I was excited about the capabilities of this Canon -- I have a Sony I like, Ive had Panasonics, Ive had other Canons and Nikons in the pocket-camera ranges . . . but I wanted an articulating viewscreen for an upcoming trip because I take a lot of garden photography and with an articulating viewscreen you get a lot more flexibility in framing a shot -- unfortunately the pictures are so poor I cant use them for anything. This is the first camera I have had that I cannot get to take crisp pictures. Maybe I just got a lemon but the pictures overall are just not satisfying.

Cant go wrong with Canon P&S cameras. Still have a couple from years back. Still work great. When 1st getting this camera I thought, 40x zoom? Seems a little extreme but when I started using it, it was pretty nice. With the optical image stablizer its fairly easy to hand hold at 40x. Doesnt hurt to use a support though. Camera has a lot of features not unlike any other P&S. Ive always stuck with Canon because their menus are close to the same, so if you have had a previous Canon then you would be at ease using this one. The tilt screen is a nice touch for shooting a selfy or shooting at low angles. I would recommend downloading the manual for further information regarding features. Exposures are very good. It shoots very close up without additional settings.

When taking video with zoom the camera will not focus on the image. I also have the Canon SX 720 and its performance is far superior. Do not buy until Canon comes out with a fix.

This camera had a couple of weak points that made it unusable: it doesnt focus at max zoom and the wifi remote use worked only sporadically. I read the reviews before me and thought they meant that the camera had a hard time focusing at zoom. Mine didnt just have a hard time, it just plain was out of focus. The wifi connection, where you look at your cameras view from your phone, lost its connection with my phone 3 feet away. Basically, its a lemon. I am really surprised that Canon released this. Its quality was the level of Chinese knock-off, not of a premier brand.

Great camera. Took it on a trip to Alaska and it did a superb job. Initially I got this as something I could fit in my pocket and take out for shots but it is too big for that. Im happy with it anyway though because it really takes fantastic pictures. With its small but not pocket-worthy size I suggest this case that I purchased with it. Megagear MG1174 Canon PowerShot SX730 HS Ever Ready Leather Camera Case and Strap, with Battery Access, Dark Brown The camera comes with tons of settings too to get pictures just right. The added Bluetooth and WiFi options are super great for taking full quality images from the camera straight to your phone. Battery life is great but Im one to always purchase another as you never know. There is no memory on-board without an SD card. Im attaching sample pictures: one with no zoom and the other all zoomed in with the optical and digital maxed out. They are of Flattop mountain in Anchorage, AK. The screen is also a major plus for taking selfies. Its great for people who dont like to hand your tech over to the common tourist to take a photo of you and your travel buddy. I will also attach a macro shot as well. Overall a fantastic camera.

I initially was really looking forward to this camera - a professional photo quality that fits in (well, most) pockets? The zoom has been excellent, I often take photos at concerts. Extremely sharp even from far away. The sports feature is also neat and it has a few kiddie creative modes that are fun to mess with. The reason Im disappointed is the TERRIBLE NIGHT lighting and TERRIBLE auto focus including while taking video. In a lot of ways, this camera reminded me of the crap $150 models I used to buy. It is unacceptable for this thing to struggle to focus and we lose a lot of critical shots. And it is STILL worthless at night, with fairly boring pictures (read: extra gritty) when taking skyline photos. The "night scene mode" doesnt help much. While I dont discourage buying this camera, I hope Canon irons this stuff out.

Been using the PowerShot line of cameras for nearly 20 years now and everyone I get is better and better. If you want crazy optical zoom and excellent photos, this is the unit you need. Lots of easy to use menus for shooting options as usual and all the settings just work so well. The zoom power will blow your mind!!! The action shot, multi-photo shoot setting makes catching quick sports type action a breeze. Its not as compact as my previous PowerShots but........... they also didnt have 40x optical zoom either!

Ive been buying Canon cameras for probably thirty years and loving most of them. This camera has a fatal flaw that may require me to evaluate competitive brands: the polarization of the viewing screen is 90-degrees out of sync with all my other Canon cameras, so I cannot aim the camera in landscape view with my polarized sunglasses on. The engineer that did this should be fired! My hobby is boating, and polarized lenses are essential on the water. My glasses are also prescription, so I dont see as clearly without them. This SX730 requires me to remove my glasses to take a picture, which is totally unacceptable! I didnt realize this until it was too late to return the camera. When next I upgrade Ill try Canon, but return the camera immediately if the screen polarization is incorrect.
