I...LOVE...THIS....LENS Seriously, I love it. I received it on 11/6/2015 and just happened to have a Senior session scheduled for a soccer player. At f/1.6 I was shooting full bodies w/ him about 15 yards from the net and it was REALLY blowing it out. I knew this thing was a bokeh machine, but I seriously didnt realize it was THIS much of a bokeh machine. Words cant do it justice. Seeing other peoples photos taken with it cant do it justice. You truly need to throw it on your camera and shoot the way you normally would, and see how much this thing transforms your work to appreciate how good this lens is. This thing is worth every penny I paid for it.

This is probably the first review that Ive written in a long time that I wish I could give more than 5 stars. This lens is, without a doubt, the best lens I have ever put on my camera. I have the 24-70 2.8, the 70-200 2.8, the 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8, and have had a few others in the mix recently. As a professional photographer, lens are key. I shot for the first time with this new lens last night and am absolutely blown away by the quality of images it produced. My other lens I used last night was the 24-70 2.8 and it doesnt hold a candle to this one, even though it is a great, great lens in itself. I cant say enough good things about this. Oddly enough, I was considering returning it for the 85mm 1.8 before last nights photo shoot. At 1/3 of the price, I wondered if it was worth the difference. I havent shot with the 1.8 but I cant see ever getting rid of this lens after I saw the results. Wow. Buy this if you have the funds to do so! Even if not, find a way to get them so you can! :)

WOW!! I used to have the Nikon 85mm f/1.8 but sold it right after receiving this Nikon 85mm f/1.4. Super sharp with gorgeous bokeh! The only negative...the ONLY one...is that I hate the lens hood. It locks onto the lens nicely for storage, but when put on for actual use, its very loose. Well, it does click in but a small bump will jar it loose. All of my other Nikon lens hoods are secure. Absolutely worth the cost if youre looking for one of the best Nikon portrait lenses!

I have used fine lenses for 40 years (Hasselblad, Leica, Nikon). This is an excellent lens. Not quite as sharp as the sharpest Nikon lenses (eg. 105 f1.4 or 200 f2) if you look VERY closely but generally an excellent all-round and portrait lens for the D850. It did require some focus fine-tuning so dont neglect that. Relatively light and compact, excellent colors, creamy bokeh. No CA that Lightroom wont take care of. I have used the f1.8 too which is a very nice lens too. I think the f1.4 is a tiny bit sharper at equivalent apertures. I very much doubt you will be disappointed by this lens.

As a photographer with over 50 year experience I ve never come across a lens more accurate and precise. .bokeh rendition is the best ive ever seen.If you an fx camera owner ( dx to a degree ) this baby will turn you into a whole class photographer if you know how to control your camera essentials(Shutter. ..aperture.....Iso et el).Photography is about subjects and imagination to a large degree than the camera primarily.....If money is no restraint. .this is a must have lens for you.

This lens was a great purchase. It is tack sharp on my D800. Works very well in low light. The focus is very fast and quiet. The build quality is excellent and I would recommend this to a friend. This is my go to Lens. I only switch to my 35 mm 1.4 only if I am inside or if I want to try photograph more landscape or urban-scape.

This 85 1.4g and 105 DC are my favorite portrait lens. I use 85 for indoors / low light and 105DC mostly for outdoors. 85 has creamier Bokeh (of course!) and 105DC has slightly faster autofocus (Both focus faster than 24 1.4g and Canon 85 1.2L). I shot indoor kid karate display once and this 85 was no sloth capturing the flying movements. When mounted on F5, the 105DC is scary fast for focusing and I noticed the same applies to 85, which also focus faster on F5 than on D700. Both lens are tack sharp (If picture was bad I found usually it was my fault). Both lens render beautiful skin colors and 3D like pictures. Being the new design 85g has more contrast & saturation than the 105DC (depends on the scene sometimes I choose 105DC for its subtlety). When shoot against sun 85mm is noticeably better (Nano coating) than 105DC. 85mm is well built and balance well on F5 and D700. It is fatter lens but feels pretty good in hand. After brief use, I noticed large debris appear inside the lens elements and figured that was because the internal lens movement for focusing , which pumps air and thus trapped the debris in (105DC has some debris too). Was a bit of surprise since 85 1.4g has weather seal design while 105DC does not. No big deal. I am very happy about the pictures and capability it provides . Yes compared to 85 1.8g the big brother shows diminished returns (not necessary three times better from what I read). I bought 1.4g before 1.8g rumors surfaced on internet. Nevertheless, this is a keeper and compliment very well with 105DC. ***Update***: I have been using this lens for 2+ years as all around lens. It proved to be very versatile for not just a gold standard portrait lens but also a great lens for street and landscape application. I like the size, weight and confidence provided by this 85g. This lens is on my camera most of time and has produced many satisfactory pictures that received high praises from family and friends. it worked so well for film (Velvia 50, Provia 100, Kodak Gold), digital (D700/D750) and video (D750). On the side note I found my photographic skills have improved gradually with years of experience on prime lens. I still do not own zoom lens (I admit I have always been tempted to grab 14-24 and 70-200 vrii) and found these prime lens (85g, 24g, 105DC and 50g) meet all of my current photographic needs. Highly recommended!

Oh and this lens is the best lens purchase Ive ever made. I dont know why I waited so long, but it is absolutely the best portrait lens available anywhere, better than Canons 85mm f/1.2. In fact, if you check out the link above, youll see that Nikons lens actually provides a shallower depth of field, yet focal points are SHARPER at the same time!!!! That makes it the best, unquestionably. The price tag is intimidating, of course, but for the worlds best portrait lens that constantly wows myself and every client I shoot, AND performs better than Canons $2,200 counterpart? WORTH.EVERY.PENNY. Anyone who doesnt think this lens deserves 5 stars either doesnt know how to use it, isnt a professional, or is being critical of minor issues that present in every lens Nikon offers. Yes theres some chromatic abberation occasionally, but guess what, that happens with every lens around, and can be easily reduced in post processing. If youre buying this lens, do yourself a favor and dont bother unless youre planning on shooting full manual and in RAW. You wont be able to fully experience this lens capabilities unless you do. Real photographers shoot in manual and RAW. Period. FYI: I shoot weddings and portraits and also use the 50mm f/1.4, 24mm f/1.4 and other lenses like that and LOVE shooting wide open. If youre heading on any portrait photography related path, YOU NEED THIS LENS if you dont already have it.

Of all the Nikon lenses Ive used, this is one of my favorite. The images come out vibrant and sharp meaning that they require a lot less post processing. If you shoot wedding or portraits outside and prefer natural natural light this needs to be in your camera bag. May I also suggest getting the "B+W 77mm XS-Pro Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Nano Coating (010M)" When youre paying this much for glass its best to protect it.

This lens has changed the way that I take pictures. It is amazing. If you are thinking about buying this lens and have the money: buy it today. You cannot, will not go wrong. If you dont have the money, sell your other lenses and get this one. If you cant do that and you are serious about your craft, rent this lens. Amazon shipped the already perfectly engineered Nikon box very well. Ive never spent so much on a lens but I have picked up more work based on what Ive been able to do with this remarkable piece of engineering.
