First prime lens, and first lens purchase outside of the kit lenses. Took my photography to the next level and started booking shoots immediately following the first shots I took. Get it! One thing to note! This is meant for FX cameras (Full Frame) however works fine with a DX crop sensor like my D5300. But note that any lens, both DX and FX, will result in a 1.5 crop ratio on your photos. So this being a 50mm, its truly a 75mm. If you want a true 50mm on a DX formatted camera, I would suggest starting with the Nikkor 35mm 1.8. With the crop sensor, that one is 52mm, and is also a beast! I have both, and use the 35mm for my prime, and this 50mm for portraits. I was new to all that info upon purchase and I wish I would have known. Enjoy!!

This is my everything lens. Ive been traveling and this lens stays on my camera probably 85% of the time. It takes such beautifully clear pictures and the bokeh is dreamy :)

This is a decent lens if its on sale. The only reason its getting a mediocre rating is because at full price, I simply cant see it being that much better than the excellent Nikon 50mm f/1.8G. The 1.8G is a flat out bargain, and is the main reason many people might choose not to purchase the 1.4G. I own both, and spent some time testing both lenses, and in most instances the 1.8G is as good or better. On the plus side, the lens focuses fairly quickly, and opens up to f/1.4 when you need it. Its slightly heavier than the 1.8, but not so heavy to weigh you down. I think its a decent lens to have if you get it at a great price, otherwise id get the 1.8 and save the difference for something else.

This lens is pretty great. Im new to photography, so dropping this much cash on a new lens was a big leap for me (versus the cheaper "nifty fifty" f1.8), but Im so glad I took the chance. This lens shoots beautifully and gives gorgeous bokeh. Ive included some photos here from my very first day using this lens so you can get an idea - Im not a great photographer yet though, so dont blame the lens for anything thats out of focus or stupidly shot.

OH MY LANTA! I love this lens! I have been doing photography for 2 years now and have slowly built on my collection of lenses. This lens, aside from the 85mm 1.8f is by far my favorite portrait lens. Really it is the most universal sense and it provides amazing quality pictures! If you are a new photographer looking for a startup lens...this is it! It is affordable and definitely provides high quality pictures. If you are an outdoor/natural light photographer like myself; I would recommend getting the polarized lens cover that they offer with it. The polarized lens cover helps shade sunlight and glares that will be picked even if you do use a lens hood. Had I known this would have been such a great lens; I would have bought this baby first!

Wonderful quality! I am very happy with this item. It came exactly as described in the description & packaged well. I am very happy with my purchase & highly recommend this sell. I will definitely come to them in future purchases. This lens is tack sharp & exactly what I was looking for. You can see the amazing quality of the bokeh in the photo I shared. I highly recommend this lens for its amazing depth of field!

While 2/3 of a stop difference doesnt seem like much you really notice it in the wide open bokeh and sharpness stopped down. Compared to the f1.8g you see the advantage from f1.4-f3.2. stopped down any lower you wont see a significant difference. This lense is at its best around f2 getting the smooth bokeh you want with sharp in focus section you need.

Pretty new to photography but I absolutely love this lens. Im shooting with a nikon d7200 and even better than me loving this lens, my fiancé loves the photos (which makes her more patient when I want to experiment). Fantastic quality

This is a fantastic lens. I upgraded from the 50mm f/1.8D and am very pleased. Shooting on my D600 I can see noticeable improvements in sharpness and color rendition compared to the older lens. I read many complaints about the autofocus speed on this lens. Ive had no issues both indoors and outdoors. It focuses without delay and accurately. I know that my f/2.8 zooms focus a little quicker, but Im not using this for moving targets in time sensitive situations, so the extra 1/3 of a second it takes to lock focus is of no consequence to me. Its astonishing to see how much light it can absorb when used at large apertures. Im enjoying the nice bokeh, and ability to shoot most any subject with available light. The sharpness and clarity is superb! Externally, it has solid build quality, nice ergonomics, and good looks like the other Nikon G series prime lenses. I recommend this lens to anyone who is contemplating the purchase, you wont regret it.

F/1.4 performs like a dream in low light and creates a wonderful blur. I also like the minimum focus distance at about a foot so I can get a tight shot even at 50mm. Focus is fast and quiet and its a must have for any photographers. 50mm is a must have for me. Sometimes I just want to carry it because its smaller and doesnt make me stick out like a sore thumb with larger lens. Below is a summary of how I use all of my lens today and I hope it will help you find what you are looking for if you have similar needs as mine: * AF-S 50mm f/1.4: Great for infants and walk-around lens on the street. I use this lens most of the time for infant pictures because 1) I dont want to use flash when infants have their eyes open even if I have a softbox/umbrella. 2) lightweight 3) low light performance at f/1.4. I also uses this when Im out of the house because its not in-you-face when you pull it out of you bag so people wont notice you. This lens also makes me move around a bit to be more creative vs. just zoom in and out. 50mm lens makes me think more about the shots. * AF-S 60mm f/2.8 micro: Great macro lens: I use this for very close up shots. I can get as close to less than an inch away even though the minimum focal length isnt listed as being 1 inch away. You will want good lighting since flash will be useless when you are this close to the subject. I take photos of baby lips, eyes, face, hands and feet, & other objects such as jewelry * watches. Basically any fairly stationary subjects that I want to highlight the details and intentional imperfections/wrinkles, etc. I sometimes wonder if I should use this all the time instead of my 50mm but I find the 50mm better at non-macro shots because it focus faster and lets in 4 times more light. * AF-S 85mm f/1.8 : I use this most of the time for adult portraits and it has very good low light performance as well. I choose this over the f/1.4 version because the other reviews Ive read on the web did not justify the extra $1000 spend for marginal performance improvement and unless I am getting paid to take pictures all the time, I dont see the need to pay the extra cost for the f/1.4. This lens also makes me move around a bit to be more creative vs. just zoom in and out. * AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8: I use this when I just dont know what kind of pictures I could be taking and need to have zoom & I dont have to move around as much. While I dont take landscape pictures (24mm) often, I will use this for a large group outing, birthday parties when I may need to get a wide shot of a lot of people in a room and be able to have a little bit of zoom capability and not have to walk up so close to the peoples face. This allows me to get some candid shots when needed. Its fairly heavy at 2 lbs and huge when you put on the hood so I almost never use this lens when Im on the street because it attracts a lot of unwanted attention. I wouldnt want this hanging on my neck or shoulders for a long period of time. * AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 vr2 : This is one of my favorite lens only because I can use it for portraits as well (with some lighting support) and I can get really good candid shots since I can be much farther away 10-20ft from my subjects and able to get a nice picture. I do have to crop at times to get rid of the cluttered background but with the D600 camera, I have enough megapixel details to crop my pictures when needed. This is obviously a monster lens so I avoid taking it for street photos even though Ive had some nice pictures and experiences on the street but its so big... Ive had people stopping me asking me if Im a paparazzi and which celebrity I am stalking..... haha. Its almost over 3 lbs so I definitely wouldnt want this hanging on my neck or shoulders for a long period of time. * AF-S 70-200mm f/4: this is also a great lens and a fantastic alternative to the 2.8 version. At over $1000 less, this is a bargin and great lens if youre taking photos at good lighting conditions (outdoor, have flash or good indoor lighting). Otherwise it may be problematic for you at F/4.
