Always thought a 50mm would have been a difficult lens to use. had some experience with the "Nifty Fifty", appreciated for its portability and quality despite a very limited cost and size. This new RF lens is from another planet. So sharp, love the bokeh in the background. At f1.2 and with focus on the closest eye, every image is super sharp and the result is simply stunning.

This is a magical lens - there is no comparison to anything else I have ever used. Take any picture in almost any lighting conditions. At night. During the day. Produce intense background blur. Take shots in almost total darkness. There is no image stabilization and I have not needed it. Take pictures at 1.2 and get intense sharpness. Good reason to buy eos r just so you can use this incredible device. I absolutely love it - bravo Canon.

I am absolutely stunned by the optical performance of this lens. As of the time of this review, there is only one camera body which this lens can be used on, but oh my!!!!!! This is the greatest 50mm ever made with optical performance matching the Zeiss Otus but with lightning fast auto-focus. I was taking test shots of my infant with this lens from far away, and as I was zooming in, I was shocked by the details of her face as I zoomed in on a tiny crop. This lens has only been available for a month, but it should become a LEGEND. It surpasses any prime lens any lensmaker has ever made if you ignore the super-telephotos which stand in a category of their own and are far easier to make optically perfect. I have no idea what the prior reviewer that mentions the Sigma Art is taking about. I owned (and now have sold) the 50mm Sigma Art. It is a fantastic prime but is not in the same league as the Canon RF 50mm. Upon focusing, the front lens elements retracts in. You will need a 77mm front filter to properly weatherproof this lens. My strong recommendation is the Breakthrough Photography X4.

I waited to buy the nifty fifty and when the EOS R was announced I decided to switch. This lens was a deciding factor. I love this lens so much and now this is my regular lens. This lens is expensive but once you use it, you will understand the price behind the lens.

This lens truly is fantastic. Im attaching a couple of un-cropped images shot a f/1.2 (one inside really closeup, one outside for more of a 3/4 portrait with rider and horse). I couldnt see any vignetting or distortion in either one. It also performs superbly at apertures throughout - Ive been pleased with images shot from f/2.8 through f/16. Im one of those who feel that 35mm is closer to what I see than 50mm - and I love the RF35 for its light-weight, unobtrusive characteristics. But this 50mm gem is a great lens for someone who wants a walk around focal length that can also hold its own when it comes to portraiture. It is fast to focus, quiet, renders beautiful color, saturation, detail and bokeh. Yes, it is somewhat heavy, but it didnt bother me to carry it during a four hour event (part of which was shared with its 24-105mm sibling). For the image quality that this glass delivers, the weight is appropriate and the balance on the EOS-R is a pleasure. Bottom line: this lens holds its own compared to the other fast fifties out there. The price is commensurate with the research and development cost that Canon put into an entirely new lineup that more than competes with its Canon EF equivalents as well as the offerings by other manufacturers.

This new 50mm 1.2 is simply amazing! Considerable improvements compared to EF version: sharper, focuses faster and extremely accurately with the R camera body (basically, you can get f/1.2 shots all day long), and better control of fringing. This lens still has its own character; it has not gotten too "clinical" as newer lenses seem to be getting lately. A key ability of f/1.2 lenses are their ability to create separation of subject from background (or a 3-D effect), and this lens delivers here extremely well! Out-of-focus areas gently transition into dreamy blur and lift the subject off of background. Naturally, this lens takes in tons of light! With my RP body, I can seriously take shots in near total darkness! You can get very close to subjects, giving it pseudo-macro abilities with a good crop. Additionally, I like the focus limiter and control ring, which make for some very nice enhancements and additional controls. It is large, a tiny bit bigger than an 85 1.4, but feels nicely balanced. This lens hasnt left my camera body since purchasing, and I imagine it wont for quite some time. I am very pleased with this amazing lens, and think its worth every penny! All sample shots in this review shot a f/1.2.

The SIgma is actually a slightly better lens. It doesnt have any stabilization either. I dont understand why Canon start to urge everybody to use their R system, which is a failure. I had the R body for a week, but it is so fragile that the body has been cracked in two spots. Useless garbage!
