Id been kicking around getting a ring flash for a long time, but couldnt justify the $500-$700 Canon wanted for theirs. Im hesitant to buy anything non-Canon, but I decided to give it a shot because the reviews for this device were overwhelmingly positive (and it was on sale for a smokin price). My expectations were exceeded both in the quality of construction as well as the diversity of flash control options - plus, it comes with FOUR lens adapters (52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 72mm). You will have to order these separately if you buy the Canon flash. Bottom line: all pros, no cons.

Loved this product. Great price, and worked great on my Canon 5d MIII... for a while. After reading all of the reviews, the first thing I did upon receiving this in the mail was to immediately tape the battery door shut. I figured I wouldnt take a chance on it failing and I would help support it with the tape. It worked great for about 4 months and then, one day, the battery door just busted through the tape. Really really bad design. Unbelievable that they can design a flash that can sync with your canon camera and produce great macro pictures, but they cant figure out how to keep a battery door shut? Now I look like an idiot with a whole bunch of tape wrapped around it. Also, I got purchased a Canon 5d MIV, and for some reason this did not work on it. I thought the flash was broken, but put it back on my 5dM3 and it worked again. Take it off, put it back on the 5dM4 and it doesnt work.

Update. So after all, I had to “borrow” a lego piece from my son and modify it a little. Used crazy glue to stick it to the flash. It seems to work. The after pics taken two weeks after I glued it. Original review. Had it for 4 months and used it no more than 10 times. I am very careful with everything I touch, especially electronics, but the battery door broke on its own, without any impact or any force of any sort. Very poor design that makes this pretty nice ring lite flash turn into garbage. And it seems the company is not doing anything to make the situation better.

I have a Sony a6000 and wanted a ring flash that would fit my kit lens and my 55 X 210 mm zoom. I had already purchased step-up rings for both lens so I could use universal lens caps for both lens. I say this because the smallest adapter ring offered with is ring flash is 52 mm., which is the size step-up rings I had purchased. Now for the reason for my review. I was reading some of the questions asked about this flash, and one of the questions was whether this flash would work on a Sony a6000. In answer to the question an uninformed person had responded by say that it wouldnt work because Sony had its own type of hot shoe. That answer was completed wrong! Sony changed its hot shoe to a universal type that will accommodate just about flash you might put on it. I have two Canon 580 EX flashes and they work on the a6000. I purchased a Yongnuo YN568EX II which works great on the a6000; so I purchased the YN14EX confident that it would also work. Today was the first time I have used the flash, but I can say with confidence that it works in ETTL and manually very well.

The ring light worked great. Right up until the plastic latches on the battery for broke in the middle of a shoot. The batteries popped out and hit the floor and rolled over to my subjects feet. AWESOME. this was 3 months into owning it and maybe the 7-8th time I used it so it having a one year warranty I attempted to get a replacement from the company I purchased it from through Amazon Tay Sun Express they told me in broken English it wasnt broken and it wasnt under warranty. They have not responded to any other emails Ive sent them. so. Im out $102 USD Buyer beware.

JUNK. As other reviewers have mentioned, the battery door is extemely brittle. Its actually beyond brittle. It will self destruct in a matter of days. Since I was aware of this problem, I took utmost care installing batteries and during use of this unit but after few hours of use the battery door could not take the pressure of the batteries themselves and broke right off. Once that happened, we tried rubber bands, tape, cable ties, etc, anything other than superglue but nothing worked.

Overall, Im very satisfied with this ringflash. When Im out and about trying to photograph bugs for ID purposes, I snap on this baby because I know I will easily get a clean photo of an insect that Im using for my collection. Now, if I was trying to get a bit artistic with it, I wouldnt really rely on it, since its a single light source that lights up your subject directly. Thats when I use my other flash unit, which is my Yongnuo yn-24ex. Build quality is a bit on the cheap side, but nothing to worry about if you take care of your things. The flash has a tendency to misfire on some occasions, but nothing that really detracts from me using it. Flash is consistent when running well, and I love that you can use it in TTL or manual, and its also split which can fire at different power levels independently from each other. It has an LED that can light up your subject, which is really helpful if you do ID moths like I do, at night. If you were to ask me if I made the right purchase with this flash, I would not hesitate to say yes, especially for the price!

Ive now purchased two of these flash units. The 1st for myself, the 2nd for my girlfriend who also has an interest in Macro Photography. Thanks to E-TTL using this flash is EASY! Ive never felt the need to take it out of ETTL mode and Ive shot this using my 70D, 6D, and her T5i. The most Ive needed to do was adjust the flash compensation on the camera itself or on the flash unit which is also a simple process. For $102 this is, in my opinion, the best flash ring youll find without spending 2x - 3x more on a Canon or Nikon unit. The trade off for the price is loss of HSS (High Speed Sync), which will limit you to your Cameras max HSS (1/250 for 70D and T5i, 1/180 for 6D). The build quality feels great, the buttons on the back are easy to press and the screen is easy to read (If you choose to use the flash in manual mode). One very very very minor complaint I have is the threads on the step-up rings dont feel high quality. This caused me to pickup a Hoya filter for my 100mm Canon so if there were any issues caused by the threads it would happen to a filter, and not my $1k lens. Helpful Tip using this: With ETTL youll notice pretty quickly your subject will be exposed properly but you may have a black background. To help with this boost your ISO to 400-800. In ETTL the flash automatically compensates for the new exposure and your subject doesnt appear to be in front of a black studio screen.

For the first month or so I would have given this 5 starts. Unfortunately, the design on the catch on the battery cover is extremely poor and after 2 months in no longer latches tight and requires rubber bands to hold it closed. Of course, this puts it a month beyond the Amazon return time, so I am stuck with a piece of garbage. If you want a ring flash, buy one from a better manufacturer and skip this one.

For the price, this little ring flash does a great job with one caveat, the cheap plastic battery compartment. Im on my second Yongnuo ring flash and now my second broken battery compartment door. I baby my equipment so its nothing Ive done. The problem is the thin, cheap plastic catches that hold the door closed. When under pressure from the AA springs, its apparently just too much for the thin plastic door to handle. To purchase a third one would put me over $300 which puts me in used canon ring flash territory. I dont think its wise to keep throwing good money after bad equipment. No complaints with the TTL or anything else; works great but the battery door is a fatal flaw. Ive emailed Yongnuo twice so far with zero response.
