The wife bought this for me as a gift. I did play with it a little bit with taking some macro shots and it seemed to do well. One thing I found is that it would not fire the flash mode while in live view on my Canon 80d. After some searching I found that the SILENT SHUTTER mode was by default active when in LIVE VIEW mode on the camera. Once I turned it off the flash fired as expected. Turns out the same held true for using a standard flash as well.

I decided to get this after seeing reviews on Youtube. Ive found the light so useful, and easy to use, that I just leave it mounted on my Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. The kit includes mounting rings in the following diameters: 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, and 67mm. You also get a plug-in wall adapter if you dont want to use batteries, although Ive been getting more than an hour of use from two rechargeable AAs. Update: This still works so well for me. I use it when filming videos on my camera along with a couple of soft boxes. This was a fantastic purchase and wasnt expensive.

The Neewer Ring Flash works good, as expected. It is simple to use. The flash mode works well. Also the other modes work as advertised. The ring does move as ils cord pulls on it. It doesnt affect the lighting on the subjects when youre using all the lights. But if youre trying to shoot with the left or right portion of the lights only, then the ring moves around the lens because the cord pulls on the ring that move easily around the lens. For example if youre trying to shoot with the right set of lights on your subject the cord will move the ring so that the lights are lighting on the bottom of your lens. Im thinking using some tape to secure the cord on the lens may solve this problem; maybe! Otherwise the unit works great for macro shooting.

I purchased the first one of these and noticed that the ring that it comes with does not attach to my 35mm lens. The flash does come with various attachments so that it is able to connect to several sized lenses. The first problem is that there is nothing to keep the ring in one orientation. It swivels all around. I returned the item and got another thinking it was defective. The second arrived identical to the first. This was annoying as now Id have to hold the ring in place if I want to use the left/right flash feature. Ok, whatever, I can live with that for the price. I left the right in its box for a few months. I just got it out today to reconnect it to my camera and it wont turn on. New batteries and all, the piece of junk wont start up. So much for the inconvenience stated earlier. I purchased the initial item back in March 2018, the replacement arrived in April so its been less than a year and its already not working. Very disappointed with this purchase.

The light seems to work OK ... the 77mm ring does not thread well into my 77mm Vivitar filter - but the 58mm adapter does fine on one of my other lenses. Also - it is listed as a "flash" ring ... and I was expecting short duration - motion stopping - flashes - not so. It is simply a ring of high efficiency LEDs and, while it works well to illuminate macro subjects (allows me to stop down 4 stops over the usual ambient daylight in open shade, the flash feature seems to be more of a battery saver than a motion stopper. For under $30 it still seems to be a good bargain.

You get what you pay for and this is a fair value. It is very important to know before you buy this flash ring it does NOT SUPPORT TTL metering. The work around is use it as a video light or if you want to use it as a flash, plan on taking a few test shots to get the exposure correct. Therefore, this may not be a good choise for bug or insect macro photography. Also, even at full power its not that bright. Sync speed is 1/100. I got it on a lighting deal, so despite its short comings, itll work for me.

It works pretty great for what its meant for... Pros: Its $30. Its bright and the dimmer ability is great. It works great for a continuous light source, which gives you the ability to let your camera meter for you. Excellent for macros and product photograph as well as detail work (Weddings etc). Cons: Haze!!!! Yucky yucky haze, unless you leave the clear one on, so the extra color diffusers and the opaque diffuser are pretty much useless. Plus, its output is significantly decreased with all but the clear. Vignettes bad especially on my 24-70... Cheap adapter rings, if youre careful this really isnt an issue. Doesnt sync well until about 1/50 then its too slow for most people... Doesnt give the ring in the iris like I had hoped.

I couldnt justify the cost of a pro-series ring flash, so I gave this baby a try. Works perfectly for product photography. It allows me to be be right on my subject and still have light from the front. EXCELLENT for Macro photography. The included rings allow me to work between my different lenses easily. There are options on the battery unit for Flash or Constant light. Ive used both and they are great!

All in all this is a useful ring light for macro photography. Its biggest drawback is the included set of leans adapters. These are made of plastic, and the threads arent as accurate as they would be if they were aluminum. Unless you take your time and be careful, I can see people having trouble getting them cross threaded and stuck. The flash function works, and I suppose it would be good for preserving battery power as opposed to using the constant on feature. Overall the light isnt super bright, but for macro shots where you are mounted on a tripod, you can simply lower the shutter speed to get the desired light level. This light is more for making sure you have even illumination on macro shots than for anything else. Compared to more expensive options though, you get probably 90% of the utility for 10% of the price. If you want to dabble in macro photography but dont want to commit several thousand of dollars until you are sure, this light along with some macro rings and a nifty 50 is a great way to test the waters.

The Neewer 48 Macro LED Ring Flash is outstanding! It comes with a ton of adapter rings (8 of them) from 49mm to 77mm. The adapters are plastic, but seem sturdy enough. I read in several reviews that the 62mm adapter does not work well. I have a camera that requires a 62mm adapter, so tried the adapter that came with the Neewer Ring Flash and guess what? It did not work well. It was too loose and would not stay in the camera. I took the adapter off and put my UV filter back on and screwed it into the UV filter and it works fine there. It was a tight fit and stayed in place. I have a 62 to 67mm metal adapter so I screwed that adapter into the camera and tried the 67mm adapter that came with the flash and it works great too. Nice tight fit! There are actually 4 modes with the flash. Continuous, Flash, Left, and Right. In the Continuous Mode the light stays on all the time. In the Flash Mode, the camera will set off the flash. In the Left or Right Mode the camera also sets off the flash. I wondered how the camera could set off the flash as I could find no reference to the Flash Mode and how it works in any other review. The flash foot has a pin, and any camera that has a hot shoe will set off the flash. The flash intensity is adjustable from -1.5 to +1.5. I found that in taking shots of objects inside, the background behind the object was dark, and that is nice. It pulls the eyes towards the target and not the background. The flash unit comes with 4 diffusers, but I did not try them yet. I am more than satisfied with the clear one. It also comes with a flash shoe for shots with the flash on a tripod or just sitting. To turn it on, just hold the ON/OFF button for a second or so, and it is turned off the same way. The ring flash is not made like a normal flash and will not light an object 10 feet away. It is made for close up macro work. It works great outside during the day as a flash fill for taking plant and flower shots. I would not use the flash for anything more than 3 or 4 feet, especially outside as a fill flash. It might work well as a portrait flash as the lighting will be well balanced and there will be no shadows. If shadows are wanted, then I would use the Left or Right bank instead. The Neewer Ring Flash is easy to use. It does vignette (can see the sides of the flash in the lens) at my camera wide open zoom setting though. I rarely use the camera at wide open zoom when taking macro shots, and to get rid of the vignetting I had to zoom to about 1X and it was gone. I took some shots at wide open and kind of liked the look of the vignetted setting on the lens with the flash. It moves the eyes to the center and I do that in software very often for that same effect.
