Best camera I have ever owned. Do not let the fact that this camera was made in 2012 sway you from buying it — it is 2019 and this camera has done nothing but taken my photography business from great to outstanding. The features are more than you could ever need, and the quality and speed is amazing. 10/10

Love this camera. I also use a Nikon D3. Both have the right file size for what I do. I have the D500 so may not buy the D5.

I got the D4 about a month ago and have been shooting with it most days since. So far I have used it for macro, fine art, still life, portraits and wildlife bird shots. I am very impressed with the image quality generated by this camera. For macros I have the D4 paired with the Nikkor micro 105mm VR lens and this is a terrific combination. I find the rapid burst rate on the camera to be extremely useful, as I shoot in small bursts, even when the camera is tripod mounted, and find that the second and third shots are almost always clearer, due to less body vibration when the shutter is held down as opposed to initially pressed. For wildlife photography I will probably stick with my D7000, since the crop factor helps to extend the reach of my telephoto lens, and Im not sure I would travel with the D4 because of its weight, but when I want to produce the best images I can for fine art and portrait work, this is definitely the tool for the job. Does it hurt to pay this much for a camera- you bet, but the D4 has turned out to be everything I had hoped it would be. A final note about purchasing through Amazon. I chose amazon for this purchase partially because of the great customer service I have gotten in the past, and this was certainly the case this time. The first D4 I received was defective and the camera concierge at Amazon facilitated the return of the defective camera and shipping of the replacement completely to my satisfaction.

Ive been waiting a long time for a D4. Ive rented them in the past and couldnt wait to actually own one. I purchased mine used with 34k actuations, 3 batteries, extra CF cards, original box and accessories. I was able to contact and speak to the owner and get more pictures of the condition and ask questions about its history. This was instrumental in my decision to purchase used. It arrived a 10 out of 10 in perfect condition at 2/3rds the price of new. I couldnt have been happier. Icing on the cake was the previous owner forwarded me links and ideas of how to care for it. Clear signs that he took care of his equipment. Its now lonely stablemate is a D7000. Transitioning to the D4 was very easy since the menu systems are very much the same. The D7000 has U1 and U2 memory settings. The D4 has 4 banks each of custom settings AND shooting settings. Separating the two is genius and allows for quick changes for multiple configurations. Im the team photographer for my sons HS football team, my daughters HS indoor volleyball team and I shoot my kitchen and bath remodels (Im a contractor, its for my website). Switching between daylight/indoor/stadium light fast action single point focus with shallow DOF, to daylight/indoor/stadium light group still shoots with a greater DOF with d51 focus is a piece of cake. The only gotcha is that the D7000 allowed you to save the settings. You could select U1 or U2 and change the settings, then all you had to do to go back to the save settings was switch out of U1 or U2 and then back, and you were back to the saved settings. The D4 settings stay where you last left them as you change banks. Kinda different and makes you change banks to keep the banks mission specific. FX vs DX: I was very spoiled with the extra reach of my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 being 105-300. What I have found is that the picture quality is far superior with the D4 that I can crop down and get fantastic images AND i get to enjoy the 70 end when action gets close. Also the little extra DOF on the 200 end is handy when focus isnt perfect. FYI DX DOF is 2.13 at 200mm f2.8 at 50 and FX DOF is 3.19 at 200mm f2.8 at 50. I post process all of my images to get the look I like. I constantly get feedback from other parents asking how I get them to look so real and pop. Lightroom and Photoshop make me look good (can I get an Amen here). Not so secret, trade secrets....and a good eye. The D7000 kept me is very good practice in Lightroom. No matter how I played with my white balance and picture control, I always had to post process to get the colors and shadow enhancement I like. The images that come out of the D4 are remarkable and require MUCH less processing. Im still a fanatic and have to touch them :). One thing I noticed is that I have to bump up the brightness one notch because they come out too dark at the default setting. Im a manual nut and read it cover to cover the first day. Then I go back and try new features and fine tune them. I would consider myself a photo enthusiast and the D4 is not TOO much camera. I use so many of the new goodies on it and love the extra control and configuration options. For example: both my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 and 24-70 f2.8 lenses have VC. So using the AF-on button exclusively for autofocus isnt an option (AF-on button doesnt engage VC, although it will save your battery, fast action sports wont allow VC to be ready when I am). Having autofocus at half shutter AND with the AF-on button just confuses my brain. So I use the AF-on button as a AF lock. This way I can frame away from center focus at anytime. The two different memory cards dont bother me. Just weird tho. Honestly, I just use the CF card and the XQD card as backup. I ordered the eyecup accessory and couldnt be happier with it. One thing I cant stand is having your face touch the LCD screen. You get all your facial oils on the LCD and its a mess when its hot out. The cup keeps your face far enough away from the LCD to keep it clean. I tried the magnifying eye piece but returned it. It keeps your face ever further away but I didnt like the reduced view of the frame. Overall I couldnt be happier. Awesome upgrade. I thought I would use the D7000 more but I only use it as a second camera with the 24-70mm for close up group shoots during sports. Now I need a second D4! My wife would kill me if she heard that!

This camera is amazing. No other way to say it. Ive had it for a year now after shooting my D3 for years. I wanted a camera that could should cinema quality video. I feel like this camera can take pictures in situations where one would think its impossible. My favorite lens to use with this camera is the Nikon 50mm 1.4. This lens is so amazingly sharp. Walking around the streets of Chicago it can literally take pictures in the dark. If you can afford it this camera will be more than you can ever handle and will provide you with years of great shooting.

My first Pro Body camera, and never more happy. I agree with all the other reviewers except the "fine tooth comb" criticisms. The D4 may have its flaws, but Ive yet to notice anything that would bother me. I have used with my Nikon "Trinity" lenses (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 2.8 EDs) in almost every kind of light situations. I use it for Friday night high school football games, indoor basketball, afternoon travel baseball games, and last August I took my D4 on a trip to Yellowstone NP. You can find a lower cost FX camera for landscape and wildlife photography, but youre not going to get the 11fps. Sports photography is the majority of what I do, thats why I chose the D4. If I did just portraits and landscape, I would have purchased the Nikon D800 and sacrificed fps for more megapixels. Using my D4, Ive printed sports images up to 20 x 24 without digital editing, and I am amazed at the image quality. I consider myself a high quality amateur photographer. Using the D4, Ive forced myself to learn more and for this reason, my photo skills have improved. There is no sense in making an investment in this camera unless you learn how to use it, and use it to get the most out of it. As for Yellowstone NP, I rented the NIkon 400 mm f/2.8 vr ii lens ($9,000 lens that has limited use for me). I captured a photo of a gray wolf from 300 yards, and the 16x20 photo, which hangs in my classroom office. It looks as though he was 20 feet from me. The sharpness and colors are incredible. I also have a photo of a grizzly bear from 150 yards. Its also a 16x20 image in my classroom office. Both photos were taken in the east end of the Lamar Valley in the early morning hours just an hour after sunrise. As for sports photography, I have a photo of my son batting and in full swing, late afternoon sun, with the ball just off the bat for a home run. The 20x24 image hangs in his bedroom. I also have a photo of my daughter playing softball under artificial light. Also a 20x24, and no less extraordinary in color image quality and sharpness. I dont think Id have the incredible colors, sharpness, and size, if it werent for the advanced D4, and 11fps. As for high school football, and low artificial light situations. The very fast AF system is remarkable under low light. The sharpness and colors are extraordinary. Before the D4, I used a D300. You cant compare a DX to FX, but I can can say the differences are really noticeable. The D4 has made me a better action sports photographer.

I think I tried every camera in the NIkon line up, D90, D7000, D800 and the D800e. This one is a keeper. While the D800s are great cameras the file sizes were to much to bear when editing. I really liked the D800e for its sharpness but felt it was to saturated and lost some contrast due to the high mps. To be honest I was after a certain look in my photos and the D4 has it. It carries a big price tag but as the ol saying goes you get what you pay for. We only have one go around at lifes game so if you can swing it go for it. I knew I would make some sacrifices to get the D4 but if if you dont treat yourself good who else is!

Love it. Gets used daily. Cant really complain at all. I use Nikon D90, D700, D800 and D4. I use primarily Nikon Glass (1.4 50mm, 2.8 14-24mm, 24-70mm and 70-200mm) with the D4, and have zero issues.
