So i bought this camera as an upgrade to my D300. ive been in love with the D300 for as long as i had it even while using a D3 in college. ill spare a review of the original and just talk about the D300s. the camera is amazingly built even better than the original, and thats saying a lot. everything about it gives me confidence in holding it. the image quality is phenomenal, with no noise, amazing dynamic range, and great ability to restore shadows and highlights in RAW files. the SD card slot also helps a great deal. i can now shoot the JPG files to it, and look them over on the macbook pro, which has an SD slot, then edit the RAW files on my desktop. having a dedicated live view button is nice, and allows you to remain in your shooting speed (S, CL, CH). you simply press the multi-selectors center button to start a movie. speaking of which, the image quality is fantastic, and focusing is very easy even when recording, since the screen is bright and very sharp. as for the file size of the videos, i was unable to find any information online, so ill post it here for you reading. for a 30 second clip at 720p, you can expect file size to be up to 90MB, depending on the subject. the one unfortunate thing, and you cant save your settings from a D300 and import them to the 300s. overall, after having the camera for 3 days, and already using it on a serious shoot, i have to say its an even better camera that i was expecting and there is nothing about it i feel like its missing.

I purchased this camera to replace my Nikon d80. This is a solid performing dSLR. The entire frame is metal and durable I am convinced it could take a few falls though I never tested it. It is also sealed to be weather proof another feature I did not test, but I did use it in conditions with sand and mist such as the beach with little issues. It can take pictures very quickly as long as your memory card has the speed to handle it. I am told if you add the battery pack to this camera it will shoot another frame per second quicker. Though this camera is dated where picture quality may not be as ideal as needed, the camera itself is very capable and would make a great durable spare. Keep in mind the camera will add a bit of extra weight and space to your bag.

First let me star my review with a camera that I won for the past 2 Years. Pros: Great color balance Great image quality even I dont use pro 2.8 lens. Batteries after 2 years off use still last for over 600 shots with the LCD on to preview all photos. Great sensor even only 12 MP. Great white balance Fills solid and well made. Photos up to iso 1000, but never tried more to tell the true. Been my camera for weddings for the past 2 years and the studio I work never complain about image quality. I use it 95% off the time with manual settings and very happy. All controls exposed positioned on the right place. Love the B&W exposure as well. cons: soon will be my back up camera if I like the new D600. Dont do video with SLR cameras so I cant rated. Thank you for reading

Amazingly in great shape,it was almost like getting a new one.It came packaged in original box,but the battery was missing.I phoned a buddy who owns a Nikon D300,and asked if he had a "spare" he could loan me,while i placed a new battery on order.Only thing,Ive found wrong thus far is the Auto Focus Assist Lite doesnt seem to work. That doesnt really bother me,but it does bring up a question, what else might be wrong that i havent discovered?Ive thus far,put the camera through what i deem as normal camera actions, and havent had a problem.Focus meter, fps, exposure meter, flash, etc work like a charm.Very pleased in my purchase.Although i purchased this camera as a backup to my D7000, i use the D300s as my everyday Knock around camera,so it will get some use for sure.Love the feel, the build, and the overall responsiveness of this fine photo tool.

Best camera I ever owned. I love how mechanical it was and how theres a button for nearly everything. The new camera bodies have menus and sub menus and it becomes difficult to remember where to look for things. I hope Nikon builds another one like it

Ive been using this thing for years. Im a professional wedding photographer, and its a workhorse and I abuse it. Its taken a beating, but it does the trick. Yes, there are better cameras out there, but a camera is only a tool, the user is the artist. Im writing this review specifically to address a possible solution if you are have an ERR code pop up and think its life is over. Try switching modes. I shoot only in manual, popped it into automatic and it fired right off, then when I switched it back it worked again. Im not sure it will keep working forever, I think its a sign that it probably needs a good cleaning, but I got through another wedding and a few more family shoots and its still going.

love this camera...I previously had a D90 and the external methods of changing setting and modes on this camera is great...I would have given it a 5 but I havent upgraded the lenses yet that might make it unbeatable. update: the fast shooting and the two memory card slots give me a lot of versatility/storage while shooting fast moving targets...the histogram allows me to make sure my WB is set properly even tho I do not do a lot of RAW shooting or in camera processing at this time.. update: I have now upgraded my lenses and this thing takes fantastic shots....with ease....set up your custom shooting menus and modify on the fly and get great shots.....

Bought this after my D80 died in Africa from old age, use and Serengeti dust. It is sooo much better in terms of construction. Its solid, controls have a reassuring feel. It makes focus decisions in split seconds and takes pictures on demand and rapidly. It is a little disappointing the Sensor is still the old one like the D90 but it is still much more satisfying than my D80. The video feature is less useful than one would think, but its nice to have. Be aware auto focus does not work when you are filming. The button layout is not conducive to video and holding the camera steady. But this is a great camera for picture taking. Well made, solid and DX format so my old lenses still work. The next step up is really the D700. Thats a big leap.

This is a great camera. Why anyone would buy and review it just for the video is beyond me. There are so many features in this camera to be used AS A CAMERA. I agree with others that video is just a nice little add on but has nothing to do with the quality of the camera. I have had mine for over six months and used the video only a couple of times - just for fun. This is the 3rd best camera out there behind the D700 and D3. Its not that expensive for a professional quality camera. Bryan Peterson, Bobbi Lane, among others, use it and look at their photos. I suggest checking out reviews from professionals. Most of us Amazon users are amateurs including the video review.
