Purchased in May 2015, this camera served me very well as higher-functioning personal/consumer camera. I could shoot great action pictures of kids sporting events as well as great portrait photography when needed. The available EF-S lenses did a nice job at a very affordable price. My problems came with video. Up until September 2016, I would have said the video functionality was great. The video I shot of my kids sporting evens were of high quality, even the coach used them. Then the camera froze on me one day mid-match while videoing. Nothing worked or showed any signs of life. I looked online and found in numerous Canon forums that when in video mode the 70D heats up beyond its capacity to handle it and crashes the main board (it does get quite warm around the battery compartment). This has been known for several years yet Canon has remained silent on it. I sent my camera to Canon USA service (quite easy to do) and >$400.00 later (just like all the forum posts said) I got my camera back with a new main board. The camera seems fine now but I will not use it ever again for video. I was shooting volleyball sets (~20-30min long) in an indoors environment and was very careful and gentle with the camera. It was never subject to any abuse and had no damage. After 40+ years of owning Canon photo equipment (who remembers the Canon EF?) and have ZERO problems, I am very disappointed in how Canon has handled this known defect. My camera was only 16 months old (its a 12 month warranty remember!) and should not be experiencing such a complete meltdown at such an early age. If youre looking for a consumer-grade camera to shoot great pictures, it will do fine. If you want to do video, better go look somewhere else.
