The runt of the Rebel litter, the EOS 4000D - which was never intended for distribution in the U.S. - is about as basic a dSLR as Canon could make and still slap the iconic Rebel name on it. The body is marked by its very light weight (all plastic, even the lens mount, and it definitely feels it). Control knob on top doubles as the on/off switch in addition to having the usual exposure selections. Back of the camera features a low res LCD (crude by current standards) without touch control, plus buttons for WB and ISO and menu navigation. The timeworn 18MP sensor provides very good image quality, especially in RAW mode, but JPEGs are more than acceptable, too. I used my 4000D (coupled with an equally plastic Yongnuo 50mm lens) under bright cloudy skies and was pleasantly surprised by the results. Video recording is possible however sizes are are very limited and therefore not really recommended; Auto ISO cant be overridden, and the camera hasnt a microphone input port for better audio capture. Another downside, and a rather weird one, is that the hotshoe on top lacks a center contact point - only Canon brand flashes will work on the body, meaning all third party flashes and remote triggers are incompatible with the camera. All in all, though, for the $225 that I dropped on it brand new just for gits and shiggles, the Rebel 4000D is an acceptable, if now very primitive, dSLR. Its nowhere nearly as capable as my almost ten year old T2i and feels positively Neolithic compared to my T4i, but it still will be fun to use when I want an ultra light weight camera for a day of photo fun.
